Holy Week in Alatri - Historical Re-enactment of Good Friday

A tradition spanning nearly two centuries

In Alatri, an ancient Ernici town in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region, Holy Week culminates in one of the longest-running re-enactments of the Passion of Christ in Lazio. Since 1835, every year on the evening of Good Friday, the streets of the historic centre host the re-enactment of the Drama of Golgotha, a rite passed down through generations that unites popular faith with collective memory.

The historical re-enactment

The event is structured as a series of commemorative scenes featuring choirs, knights, Roman soldiers, and Jewish figures, with a large number of costumed participants reconstructing the details of past eras. The long procession winds through the alleys of the ancient city and consists of two closely linked and complementary parts: the historical section, which depicts the trial and condemnation of Jesus, and the religious section, featuring the penitential procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows.
