The patronal feast of Torre Orsaia and the re-enactment of Saint Lawrence's martyrdom in 258 AD Rome.

In Torre Orsaia, a village of just over two thousand inhabitants perched 295 meters above sea level in the Cilento hinterland, the feast of Saint Lawrence โ celebrated on August 10th โ is more than just a religious appointment. For over fifteen years, the community has staged the Historical Pageant of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, a re-enactment that transports the streets of the old town back to 258 AD, when the deacon Lawrence faced martyrdom in Rome under Emperor Valerian. It is the signature identity event for this municipality in the province of Salerno, in Campania.
The pageant begins with the rolling of drums and winds through the historic center with a scenic design that involves the entire town. Soldiers and mounted guards, the Emperor and Empress, patricians and senators, handmaidens, deacons, the poor, and lepers all parade through the streets, culminating in the figure of Saint Lawrence. In the 2025 edition, there were over 250 participants; in 2024, there were 294, performing before more than two thousand spectators.
Along the route, corners of the village are transformed into living tableaux that reconstruct the daily life of ancient Rome:
The climax occurs in the evening in the main square, Piazza Lorenzo Padulo, where the trial and martyrdom of Saint Lawrence are performed. Since 2024, the pantomime has been replaced by a full theatrical production directed by Luca Castelluccio and Rosita Speciale: a choice that has added greater dramatic depth to the final part of the evening without betraying the popular and devotional character of the feast.
One of the most original aspects of the event is that the costumes are not rented: they are handmade by the seamstresses of the Torre Orsaia tailoring workshop and remain the property of the community, edition after edition. It is a material heritage that grows every year, telling the storyโbetter than any brochureโof how the re-enactment is truly a collective work of the village.
Since 2025, the Historical Pageant has been included in the Tanager Festival program, a calendar that brings together cultural events in the area and enjoys the support of the Campania Region through the 2021-2027 Development and Cohesion Fund and the Strategic Plan for Culture and Tourism. In the same setting, on August 12, 2025, the Pietro De Luca Amphitheater hosted Dance Tarantella, a show that wove the Mediterranean rhythms of the tarantella with electronic beats, lights, and projections, featuring a food area and after-show.
The municipality of Torre Orsaia, which also includes the hamlets of Borgo Cerreto, Calleo, and Castel Ruggero, is located in southern Cilento, a short distance from the Gulf of Policastro. In August, the village experiences its most intense season: the patronal feast is the occasion when emigrants and families return home, and the Historical Pageant acts as a glue between generations. For the visitor, it is also a different way to discover a Cilento far from the crowded beaches, made of stone, narrow alleys, and still-vibrant traditions.
The patronal day is traditionally divided between religious celebrations in honor of Saint Lawrence, activities organized by the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia, and, in the evening, the pageant with the final performance. Access to the events is free.
For 2026, no official program for the Historical Pageant of Saint Lawrence the Martyr in Torre Orsaia has been published yet. The reference remains the patronal feast of August 10th, the day of Saint Lawrence, around which the event has been scheduled in previous editions.
Those wishing to attend the re-enactment can monitor the channels of the Pro Loco Torre Orsaia and the events section of the Torre Orsaia Municipality website, where the date, times, and route of the pageant are usually published. The information on this page will be updated as soon as the official announcement is available.
Torre Orsaia is most easily reached by car: the village is located in the hinterland of southern Cilento, a short distance from the Gulf of Policastro. Those arriving by train can use the stations on the Tyrrhenian line along the gulf and continue by car or local connections.
The pageant crosses the historic center of the town; the final performance is held in Piazza Lorenzo Padulo. Comfortable shoes are recommended: the village streets are sloped and partly paved with cobblestones.
Admission is free. For information: Pro Loco Torre Orsaia, tel. +39 379 1482723, [email protected]. Dates and the program for the current edition are announced on the Pro Loco social channels and the Torre Orsaia municipal website.
The evening of August 10th coincides with the night of Saint Lawrence: after the pageant, the hills around the village offer a particularly dark sky, ideal for observing shooting stars.
