The medieval re-enactment of the neo-Gothic village, in the province of Piacenza
The Historical Pageant of Grazzano Visconti is one of the most beloved medieval re-enactments in Emilia-Romagna. Born in 1976 thanks to a group of friends from the village, the event has spanned half a century of history: in 2026, it celebrated its fiftieth edition. Initially, as the founders recall, it was a simple costume walk with clothes provided by Countess Violante and a cart pulled by oxen; today, it is a structured event that attracts thousands of visitors to the charming neo-Gothic village in the Municipality of Vigolzone, in the province of Piacenza.
The re-enactment stages the journey of Valentina Visconti to France, where the noblewoman married Louis of Orlรฉans. Ladies, knights, and men-at-arms representing the noble families of Anguissola, Malaspina, and Nicelli parade through the village streets. In the afternoon, a knight tournament takes place, the winner of which symbolically accompanies Valentina on her journey: a gesture that ideally concludes the day and links the present to the medieval memory of the village.
The event unfolds from morning to late afternoon, animating the village and the castle with shows, games, and ancient crafts:
The setting is the unique one of Grazzano Visconti, a neo-Gothic village built around the ancient castle starting in the early twentieth century at the behest of Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone. Cobblestone streets, artisan shops, and old-world atmospheres make this corner of the province of Piacenza the natural stage for a re-enactment that, every spring, transforms the hamlet of the Municipality of Vigolzone into an authentic medieval village.
On May 31, 2026, Grazzano Visconti celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its Historical Pageant. The day began at 10:00 AM with animations and archery practice, followed by a show by the Flag-throwers and Musicians of the Magma Company. At 11:00 AM, the procession departed from the Castle Avenue, with the presentation of gifts and the oath of the knights; in the afternoon, the second procession, medieval tailoring demonstration, and horse tournament, and to close, the grand weapon show with jugglers and falconers.
The two parades, at 11:15 AM and 3:00 PM, wound through the streets between the castle and the village, re-enacting the journey of Valentina Visconti and the participation of the Anguissola, Malaspina, and Nicelli families. The event, organized by the Pro Loco with dozens of volunteers, confirmed the deep bond between the community of Vigolzone and its most beloved festival.
Grazzano Visconti is a hamlet of the Municipality of Vigolzone (PC), in Val Nure, about 15 km from Piacenza. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway (Piacenza Sud exit) following signs for Val Nure. The nearest train station is Piacenza, connected to the village by local bus lines.
The event takes place from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased on-site on the day of the event: full price 7 euros, reduced price 5 euros (over 65 and children aged 5-10), free for children under 4. Paid parking adjacent to the village: 5 euros for cars, 2 euros for motorcycles.
