The non-competitive walk through the stone villages and oil wells of Val Riglio
The Marcia dell'Alta Val Riglio is a non-competitive hiking event held in Montechino, a hamlet of the Municipality of Gropparello, in the province of Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna). Founded in 2022 on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Montechino, it has become in a few years one of the most beloved events in the Piacenza Apennines: the last edition gathered about 600 walkers on the trails of the upper valley.
The organizers' stated goal is to promote Val Riglio, a little-known valley rich in hilly landscapes, lush woods, and small stone villages where time seems to have stood still. The routes symbolically connect the territories of Gropparello and Bettola, two Municipalities that the march aims to bring closer year after year.
The walk offers three itineraries of different lengths, on mainly dirt paths suitable for the whole family:
Along the routes, you will encounter the Castle of Montechino, pastures with grazing herds, characteristic hamlets, and especially the historic oil wells that have made this area famous: Montechino is indeed known as "the land of oil," with over 350 extraction wells active in the past, some of which are still visible along the path.
The Montechino sports field, the starting and finishing point, hosts food stands with Piacenza specialties: cured meats, baked goods, and the unmissable potato cakes. A market of local producers and artisans is also set up, with tastings of local products. Refreshment points are available along the routes for walkers.
The Marcia dell'Alta Val Riglio is the result of the work of volunteers from the Pro Loco of Montechino, in collaboration with ViviBettola.it and the CSI, with the patronage of the Municipalities of Bettola and Gropparello. More than just a race, it is a day that combines sport, territory promotion, and conviviality, perfect for those who want to discover an authentic and still little-explored corner of the Emilian Apennines.
The fifth edition of the Marcia dell'Alta Val Riglio returns on Sunday, June 14, 2026, in Montechino di Gropparello, organized by the Pro Loco of Montechino with ViviBettola.it and the CSI, and the patronage of the Municipalities of Bettola and Gropparello.
Registration and departures are scheduled at the Montechino sports field from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM. The routes, suitable for everyone, wind through hilly landscapes, lush woods, and small stone villages, also passing by the historic oil wells of the valley. At the sports field, stands with baked goods, Piacenza cured meats, and potato cakes are set up, as well as a market of local producers.
