The Ferragosto festival in the heart of Dobbiaco, Alta Pusteria
The Great Midsummer Festival, known in German as Mittsommerfest, is the most cherished summer event in Dobbiaco/Toblach, a town in the Alta Pusteria valley in the Province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). Held every year on August 14th, the eve of Ferragosto, it transforms the town square into a vibrant gathering place for locals and visitors alike, framed by the stunning Sesto Dolomites.
The event is hosted by the Musikkapelle Toblach (Dobbiaco's brass band) in collaboration with the Dobbiaco Volunteer Fire Department. It is a deeply rooted community celebration: the town's two most iconic associations join forces to offer a day of music, conviviality, and tradition, embodying the authentic spirit of South Tyrolean Dorffeste.
The program runs from early afternoon until late at night. Guests gather in the square to enjoy lunch and spend the day together, accompanied by live music from folk entertainment groups and local bands. As evening falls, the atmosphere heats up with dance music and DJ sets that keep the square buzzing until late.
The sporting heart of the festival is the Toblacher Nachtlauf, a 10-kilometer Night Run that kicks off at 8:30 PM from the Grand Hotel Cultural Center and finishes right in the town square, where runners are welcomed into the thick of the festivities. This historic evening race, reaching its 49th edition in 2026, is beloved by both athletes and the crowds that line the streets to cheer them on.
As with any village festival in South Tyrol, there is no shortage of stands offering local culinary specialties, beer, and traditional Tyrolean dishes. It is the perfect opportunity to experience the hospitality of the Pusteria Valley and discover the traditions of a region that blends Italian and South Tyrolean culture. Admission to the festival is free, and the event is designed for the whole family.
The Great Midsummer Festival is much more than just a Ferragosto evening: it is the moment when the entire Dobbiaco community gathers to celebrate summer at the foot of the Tre Cime, in one of the most picturesque locations in the Dolomites.
The 2026 edition of the Great Midsummer Festival (Mittsommerfest) in Dobbiaco is scheduled for Friday, August 14, 2026. The 49th Night Run (Toblacher Nachtlauf) is confirmed, a 10 km evening race starting at 8:30 PM from the Grand Hotel Cultural Center and finishing in the town square, where the festival takes place. The detailed program for the 2026 edition (musical groups and DJ sets) will be published by the organizers — the Musikkapelle Toblach and the Volunteer Fire Department — in the weeks preceding the event.
Dobbiaco/Toblach is located in Alta Pusteria (Pusteria Valley), Province of Bolzano. By car, it can be reached via the SS49 Pusteria road. By train, the Dobbiaco station is served by the Fortezza–San Candido–Lienz line, with connections from Bolzano and Brunico.
The festival is held in the main square of Dobbiaco. The Night Run starts at the Grand Hotel Cultural Center and finishes in the square.
