An evening of folk music and dance at the MAT in Terlizzi
The Great Folk Festival is one of the most beloved events of the summer in Terlizzi, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Created to celebrate the music and dances of Southern tradition, the event has established itself over time as an evening of celebration, sharing, and live emotion, bringing together enthusiasts of all ages through the sounds of folk culture.
The festival takes place in the spaces of the MAT - Laboratorio Urbano on Via Macello, one of the city's main cultural hubs dedicated to creativity and artistic activities. Here, between the stage, the dance floor, and the bar service open throughout the evening, the public can enjoy an authentic folk music experience, with plenty of room for dancing and collective participation.
The Great Folk Festival program focuses on the repertoire of Southern tradition: pizziche, tammurriate, and tarantelle alternate with folk songs and serenades, in a sonic journey rooted in the ethnomusicological research of the region. Group dances, led by the evening's hosts, directly involve the audience, transforming the festival into a great community moment.
Included in the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Terlizzi, the Great Folk Festival represents an important element in the promotion of Puglian traditions. The event combines live performance with cultural memory, offering local audiences and visitors an opportunity to rediscover the intangible heritage of Southern folk music, amidst engaging rhythms and festive atmospheres.
The seventh edition of the Great Folk Festival brought the MAT - Laboratorio Urbano in Terlizzi to life on Saturday, June 27, 2026, starting at 8:30 PM. The evening confirmed the event's mission to bring together music, dance, and folk tradition enthusiasts in a festive and shared atmosphere.
The program kicked off at 8:30 PM with dances led by Abracadanze, followed at 9:30 PM by a concert from Terra dei Suoni, a group that brings pizziche, tammurriate, tarantelle, and traditional Southern folk songs to the stage. The grand finale took place at 10:30 PM with a concert by Saro Calandi, an internationally renowned accordionist and composer capable of blending folk, tango, flamenco, jazz, and world music.
