The grand Shrove Tuesday float parade in the Piana Rotaliana
The Great Carnival of Mezzolombardo is the highlight that closes the carnival season in the Piana Rotaliana, in the heart of Trentino. Every year, on Shrove Tuesday, the historic center of Mezzolombardo, in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige), transforms into a grand open-air stage for one of the most anticipated float parades in the entire region.
The procession winds through the town's streets and squares, framed by historic buildings. Leading the way are masked groups, followed by large allegorical floats built over the previous months by carnival groups from the Piana Rotaliana and neighboring towns. Themes range from tradition to creative fantasy, with nods to current events, sports icons, video games, and pop culture. The event draws thousands of spectators along the route every year.
After the parade, the festivities continue in the square with a major gastronomic highlight: the maccheronata (pasta feast) and polenta concia (cheesy polenta), along with sweets and treats for children like cotton candy. It is the convivial heart of the Rotaliano Carnival, brought to life by the volunteers of the Pro Loco.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Mezzolombardo in collaboration with the Municipal Administration of Mezzolombardo and the contribution of numerous volunteers. The Great Carnival is part of the wider Rotaliano Carnival calendar, which also involves the neighboring towns of Mezzocorona, Roverè della Luna, Faedo, and Grumo with parades and parties during the carnival period.
The parade takes place in the historic center of Mezzolombardo, with the gathering and departure of the floats in via Fiorini and the conclusion in the town squares. Mezzolombardo is easily accessible along the Adige Valley, north of Trento.
On Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the historic center of Mezzolombardo hosted one of the most well-attended editions of the Great Carnival. Along the streets and squares of the town, twenty-one allegorical floats paraded, preceded by seven masked groups, with themes ranging from ancient Romans to Nintendo characters, from the Formula 1 paddock to Japanese samurai, and even a float dedicated to tennis star Jannik Sinner.
Organizers estimated approximately ten thousand attendees along the route. At the end of the parade, in the square, Pro Loco volunteers served the traditional maccheronata with polenta concia, as well as cotton candy and Nutella bread for the children. Among the awards, the masked group "Glassati per caso" from Faver and the float "Santa Claus Party House" from Mezzocorona took top honors.
