The Carnival of Great Laughter, between giant papier-mâché floats and music in the homeland of Verdi
The Gran Carnevale Storico della Risata di Busseto is one of the oldest and most beloved carnival events in Emilia-Romagna. Documented as early as 1879, this event transforms the streets and squares of the Municipality of Busseto, in the Province of Parma, into a large open-air stage for almost a month. The name itself tells of the spirit of the festival: a joyful, ironic, and deeply popular celebration, in which laughter is the protagonist.
The heart of the event is the masked parade, enlivened by gigantic allegorical floats made entirely of papier-mâché. They are the result of the patient work of local "carristi" (float builders), united in the Associazione Amici della Cartapesta (Friends of Papier-Mâché Association), who for months give shape to imposing structures several meters high. The floats tackle major current issues with satire and irony, from politics to social and environmental issues, in a tradition that has been passed down for generations in Busseto.
Busseto's unique feature is the combination of the parade and musical entertainment: it is no coincidence that it is often also called the Gran Carnevale Musicale (Grand Musical Carnival). Along the streets of the historic center, the floats are accompanied by marching bands, folk groups, musical bands, and flag-wavers, while masks, majorettes, and street artists liven up the festival. There is also space for taste: the Angolo Ghiotto (Gourmet Corner) offers local traditional specialties, from Culatello to Spalla Cotta, from Mariola to torta fritta with typical cured meats, up to Carnival sweets.
The Busseto Carnival is also designed for children, with dedicated events such as Strabusseto in Maschera (Busseto in Costume), a non-competitive costume walk for families, and Strakids, an event for children. Creative workshops, giant chess in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, and themed shows complete a rich and varied program.
Experiencing Carnival in Busseto also means discovering the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi: the scenic Rocca Pallavicino, the Verdi Theater, and the city squares provide the ideal backdrop for the parades. A tradition that, in its golden years, attracted tens of thousands of spectators and still remains one of the reference historical carnivals for the entire Emilia-Romagna Region.
The 2026 edition of the Busseto Carnival unfolded over the traditional period of almost a month, from February 1st to March 1st, with its highlight on Carnival Sunday, February 15th, 2026. Along the streets of the historic center, the gigantic papier-mâché floats from local float builders paraded, accompanied by musical bands, folk groups, and flag-wavers.
Among the most anticipated events were the Strabusseto Maschera Kids, a non-competitive costume walk for families, and the Angolo Ghiotto with specialties from the Bassa Parmense. A festival that confirmed Busseto among the reference historical carnivals of Emilia-Romagna.
The Busseto Carnival traditionally includes several Sundays of parades, from the first Sunday in February to the first Sunday in March, with a final award ceremony for the most beautiful float and mask.
Busseto is located in the Bassa Parmense, along the Via Emilia. By car, it is reachable from the A1 motorway (Fidenza exit) and the A21. By train, Busseto station is on the Cremona–Fidenza–Parma line.
The parades take place in the historic center, between Piazza Giuseppe Verdi and the streets of the center, generally in the early afternoon (from around 2 PM). The main Sunday in 2026 is February 15th.
Access to the center to watch the masked parade is generally free. Some side events, such as the Strabusseto Maschera Kids walk, require a registration fee. Information at the Tourist Office and the Verdi Theater ticket office.
