The oldest and most transgressive carnival in the Alcantara Valley
The Gran Carnevale Francavillese is one of the most cherished and identity-defining events in the municipality of Francavilla di Sicilia, in the province of Messina, located in the heart of the Alcantara Valley. Regarded as the oldest and most distinctive carnival in the district, it traces its roots back to the late 19th century and has been passed down for over a century, remaining one of the most genuine and anticipated fixtures in the Eastern Sicilian festive calendar.
For several days, the town's main streets are filled with allegorical floats and masked groups bringing music, satire, and color to the stage. The parades, accompanied by a marching band, wind through the historic center and conclude with the traditional awards ceremony for the best floats and groups. The hallmark of this carnival is its irony: a playful, goliardic transgression that has accompanied Francavilla evenings for generations.
Among the most characteristic elements is the Fasuledda, the ancient collective dance that still closes the parties: participants form a circle and push each other gently with their shoulders to the rhythm of the music, using the typical mmutticedde. During the evenings, Via Vittorio Emanuele turns into a large open-air ballroom where residents and visitors dance until late into the night.
The most anticipated moment is the Cianciùta, or 'a cianciuta di re Carnalivari (the weeping of King Carnival), which takes place on Shrove Tuesday. It is a solemn yet burlesque farcical pantomime: the effigy of King Carnival parades on a float, accompanied by allusive banners and men with flour-dusted faces, known as scunchiudùti, who recite ironic funeral orations. The ceremony symbolically marks the transition from Carnival to Lent.
Thanks to its authenticity and the strength of its traditions, the Gran Carnevale Francavillese attracts visitors from all over Sicily every year, offering a perfect opportunity to discover the village of Francavilla di Sicilia and the entire Alcantara Valley, a land of spectacular gorges and ancient folk traditions.
The 2026 Gran Carnevale Francavillese was held from February 12 to 17, 2026, spanning several days of parades, parties, and events for families and children. The streets of central Francavilla di Sicilia hosted allegorical floats and masked groups, concluding with the customary final awards ceremony.
The highlight was Shrove Tuesday, February 17: from 6:30 PM, the parade gathered on Via Liguria, followed at 7:00 PM by the traditional funeral procession of the Cianciùta accompanied by the marching band, and from 9:30 PM, the dance party on Via Vittorio Emanuele with the musical group ALOHA.
