Traditional Occitan music and dance in Piazza San Martino, Ormea
The Gran Ballo Occitano is a traditional music and dance event held in Piazza San Martino, located in the historic center of Ormea, a town in the Upper Tanaro Valley in the province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Piedmontese Alps. For an entire afternoon, the square transforms into an open-air dance floor where live music accompanies Occitan dances, creating an atmosphere of joy and sharing that attracts locals, vacationers, and enthusiasts of Ligurian Alpine culture alike.
Occitan dances represent one of the most vibrant and defining cultural heritages of the Cuneo valleys. Ormea is situated in a territory with an ancient Occitan dialect, a language and culture that span the Alps from Piedmont to Provence and Gascony. The dance repertoire weaves together corrente, balet, scottish, mazurkas, and giguesโpartner and group dances passed down through generations, now enjoying a renewed vitality thanks to local festivals, musical groups, and dance masters.
The Gran Ballo Occitano is part of "Il Cuore della Montagna", a widespread initiative promoted by the Municipality of Ormea and the Alta Val Tanaro Mountain Union. Combining nature, culture, and tradition, it invites visitors to experience the territory authentically. The calendar alternates between nature hikes, photography exhibitions, cultural meetings, food and wine offerings, and public celebrations like the Occitan dance, all designed to rediscover the soul of the hamlets and alpine landscapes of the Upper Tanaro Valley.
The event is free to attend and welcomes a wide audience: from expert dancers who frequent the Occitan evenings in the valleys to beginners who want to try these collective dances for the first time. The participatory nature is the heart of the event: in Occitan dances, there is no stage, just a large circle where anyone can join in and let the rhythm guide them. The setting of Piazza San Martino, surrounded by the stone houses of Ormea's historic center, gives the festival an authentically alpine atmosphere.
Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, Ormea is an ideal starting point for discovering the Upper Tanaro Valley and the Ligurian Alps, with their hiking trails, historic hamlets, and solid mountain gastronomic tradition. Participating in the Gran Ballo Occitano means combining the discovery of an authentic Piedmontese village with an immersion into Occitan culture, in a day that focuses on music, conviviality, and the identity of the Cuneo mountains.
