About GP Larciano

The GP Industria & Artigianato di Larciano is one of Tuscany's most beloved professional cycling races. Part of the UCI ProSeries calendar, the race takes place annually on the roads of Larciano, in the Province of Pistoia, winding through the Montalbano hills and featuring the famous San Baronto climb. Established in 1967, it is the town's premier sporting event, drawing a large and passionate crowd to the roadside to witness one of the toughest one-day classics of the early autumn season.

A one-day classic in the heart of Tuscany

The GP Industria & Artigianato di Larciano is a professional road cycling race held every year in Larciano, a small town in the Province of Pistoia, Tuscany. It is a one-day classic included in the prestigious UCI ProSeries calendar (1.Pro category), the second tier of international cycling just below the World Tour. For the town in the Montalbano area, it is by far the most important event of the year: on race day, the town comes to a standstill, the streets fill with fans, and Larciano becomes the capital of top-tier cycling for a few hours.

History and tradition

The race was founded in 1967 as the Circuito di Larciano and has been held almost every year since, with very few exceptions. Over the years, it has grown to enter the UCI ProSeries circuit, attracting major World Tour teams and the most anticipated champions on the international scene. The roll of honor reflects a long tradition of Italian cycling, with many local riders etching their names into the history books. The race is organized by the Unione Ciclistica Larcianese and is also associated with the Trofeo Nello Bonfanti, a tribute to local cycling history.

The course and the climbs

The route unfolds entirely across the hills between Larciano, Lamporecchio, and Vinci, in a series of circuits that put the riders' legs to the test. The heart of the course is the Fornello climb, often paired with the detour toward San Baronto, the iconic ascent that separates the contenders from the peloton. After an initial section on flat and rolling circuits, the race intensifies with the final hilly laps, where the victory is decided. The start and finish are traditionally located in the center of Larciano.

Recent editions

In recent years, the GP Larciano has moved to early September, after long being a spring race and later a March event. The 2025 edition was won by the young Mexican rider Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates), ahead of Italians Christian Scaroni and Davide Piganzoli, confirming the increasingly high level of the field. In 2024, the Swiss rider Marc Hirschi took the win. World Tour, ProTeam, and Continental teams regularly participate, totaling over twenty squads.

The atmosphere

More than just an event for industry insiders, the GP Larciano is a popular, free celebration for the entire Montalbano community. Along the route, in the hamlets of Castelmartini, Lamporecchio, and up to San Baronto, fans line the climbs to cheer on the riders in the warm, familiar atmosphere typical of Tuscan cycling. For Larciano, it is an opportunity to showcase its territory—filled with hills, olive groves, and small villages—to an international television audience.
