The re-enactment of a village fair from the early 20th century and the live goose game in the square
The Goose Fair and Live Goose Game in the Square is a historical re-enactment that, every year on the second weekend of November, brings Mirano (province of Venice) back to the atmosphere of an early 20th-century village fair, during the days of Saint Martin's summer. The tradition is rooted in the custom of celebrating November 11th, at the close of the agricultural year, by eating goose: a custom revived in 1998 by Roberto Gallorini of the Pro Loco and Sandro Zara.
For two days, the historic centre comes alive with the Goose Fair and the Ocaria market: stalls of typical gastronomic products (from Friuli to Lomellina), artisans, costumed figures, and street performances. Goose specialities — from goose sausage sandwiches to stuffed geese, from goose risotto to goose ravioli — can be enjoyed in taverns recreated in early 20th-century style.
The heart of the event is the Live Goose Game in the Square, a living goose game conceived by artist Carlo Preti with 63 squares illustrated with anecdotes of the city, laid out on the oval of Piazza Martiri della Libertà with 2x2 metre squares, giant dice, and pawns. Six teams from the hamlets — Scaltenigo, Vetrego, Campocroce, Ballò, Zianigo, and Mirano itself — compete to reach square 63; the prize is donated to local charities. The event, organised by the Pro Loco Mirano, has received the "Quality Event" recognition presented at the Senate of the Republic.
For 2026, the Goose Fair and Live Goose Game in the Square is expected on the second weekend of November, coinciding with Saint Martin's summer: the most likely dates are November 14-15, 2026, pending confirmation from Pro Loco Mirano. It will be the 23rd edition of the re-enactment.
The great classics return: the Goose Fair with the Ocaria market, costumed figures, street performances, and taverns with goose specialities; on Sunday afternoon, the Live Goose Game on the oval of Piazza Martiri, with the six hamlet teams competing to reach square 63 and donate the prize to charity.
The detailed program and official dates for the 2026 Goose Fair will be announced by Pro Loco Mirano closer to the event. The established two-day structure includes:
