Good Friday Procession of Bagnoregio

A tradition spanning over four hundred years

The Good Friday Procession of Bagnoregio, in the heart of the Viterbo Tuscia, is one of the most deeply felt sacred re-enactments in Lazio. For over four centuries, this small municipality in the Province of Viterbo has kept the popular participation in this rite almost unchanged, attracting believers, curious visitors, and photography enthusiasts from across the region and beyond every year.

The roots of the tradition go back to the Middle Ages, fostered by the Franciscan presence in the area: Bagnoregio is, in fact, the birthplace of Saint Bonaventure, the famous Doctor of the Church. The current form of the procession was consolidated around the mid-19th century, when Monsignor Leandro Marini decreed that the image of the Holy Crucifix, always venerated in the church of San Donato, should be carried solemnly in a procession on the evening of Good Friday.

The Holy Crucifix and the legend of Civita

The spiritual heart of the event is a precious 15th-century wooden Crucifix, of the Donatello school, kept in the church of San Donato in Civita di Bagnoregio. A legend links this relic to the plague of 1499: it is said that Christ spoke to a woman, promising an end to the scourge, thus sealing the fate of the isolated village of Civita, the famous "dying city," with the community of Bagnoregio.

The entire staging revolves around this devotion: the bond between Civita, perched on its tuff spur and threatened by erosion, and the modern town is the common thread of a story that weaves together faith, identity, and historical continuity.

The pageant and the participants

The procession is a true living representation. Every year, over 350 participants in costume take to the streets, supported by more than a hundred organizers and security staff. Parading along the narrow streets of the historic center are:

• Roman soldiers and centurions in armor;
• the pious women and the Magdalene's retinue;
• biblical characters of the Passion;
• local confraternities with their symbols;
• iconographies and "mysteries" carried on shoulders, illuminated by open-flame lanterns.

The most intense moment is the transport of the Holy Crucifix along the village streets, in a hushed atmosphere marked by the slow pace of the bearers and the flickering of the flames.

The midnight rule

A strict custom accompanies the rite: the body of Christ must be returned to its original church no later than midnight. Popular tradition holds that failure to observe this rule would result in the symbolic transfer of ownership of the sacred effigy, which is why the return of the Crucifix to Civita before the clock strikes midnight is experienced with particular emotion by the entire community.
