An urban trail through the villages of Lunigiana, in the shadow of Castello Malaspina
The Giucano-Fosdinovo Run: Villages and Nature is an urban trail held in Giucano, a small hamlet in the Municipality of Fosdinovo, in the province of Massa-Carrara, in the heart of the Tuscan Lunigiana. The event combines sport, landscape, and tradition, leading participants along gravel roads, forest trails, and stretches of asphalt set in a territory defined by hills of olive groves and vineyards.
The event held its first edition on June 2, 2026, a date chosen for a reason: Republic Day is a public holiday, making it the perfect time to attract running enthusiasts and families. The concept is a light urban trail, suitable for both competitive runners and those who simply want to walk and enjoy the view, in a format that prioritizes the discovery of the village over pure athletic performance.
The route is the event's true highlight. Starting from Giucano, the path heads towards Fosdinovo, skirting the historic Castello Malaspinaโone of the most evocative fortresses in Lunigianaโbefore crossing forest sections and returning to Giucano via a dirt road, with the finish line passing through the characteristic stone gate of the old town. The itinerary tells a story spanning centuries: Giucano, documented as early as 1201, followed the fate of the Malaspina fiefdom and still preserves 17th-century churches and oratories today.
The event offers two formats: a 7.5 km competitive race, mostly on asphalt with some dirt sections, and a 4 km non-competitive walk on mixed terrain, designed for those who prefer a more relaxed experience immersed in nature and the village alleys. The organization is managed by the Centro Sportivo Italiano Massa-Carrara and Pro Avis Castelnuovo Magra, with the patronage of the Municipality of Fosdinovo and the collaboration of numerous local sponsors, associations, and volunteers.
The first edition of the Giucano-Fosdinovo Run: Villages and Nature brought the village of Giucano to life on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, for Republic Day. The event, organized by the Centro Sportivo Italiano Massa-Carrara and Pro Avis Castelnuovo Magra with the patronage of the Municipality of Fosdinovo, offered a light urban trail immersed in the landscape of Lunigiana.
The competitive route starts outside Giucano, reaches Fosdinovo, skirts the Castello Malaspina, and crosses forest sections before returning to Giucano via a dirt road; the finish line is set inside the village, passing through the evocative stone gate.
Giucano is a hamlet of Fosdinovo (MS), located along the Fosdinovo-Sarzana provincial road. By car, it can be reached from the A12 motorway (Sarzana exit) or the A15; the village is just a few kilometers from Sarzana and the coast. The nearest train station is in Sarzana.
Pre-registration is handled by sending a WhatsApp message to the organizers (333 1087818 Roberto, 328 1613904 Manuel) and attaching a photo of your FIDAL athletic membership card or that of a recognized sports promotion body (CSI, UISP, Endas, etc.).
The route alternates between asphalt and dirt paths: light trail running shoes are recommended. The meeting time is set for early morning, which is the perfect opportunity to visit the village of Giucano and the nearby Castello Malaspina in Fosdinovo.
