The medieval re-enactment of the Borgo San Luca District at the Ferrara Racecourse
The Giostra del Borgo is one of the most beloved historical events in Ferrara, in Emilia-Romagna. Organized by the Contrada Borgo San Luca, for almost three weeks in June it transforms the green area next to the municipal racecourse, on Via Ippodromo, into a true medieval citadel: pavilions, military encampments, artisan workshops, and taverns recreate the atmosphere of 14th-century Este Ferrara. It is not just a food festival or a mere re-enactment, but a grand popular event that intertwines historical memory, live entertainment, and gastronomic tradition.
The central event of the Giostra is "Ferrara Under Siege", the re-enactment of the bloody battle that in 1333 saw the forces of Rinaldo II d'Este clash with the papal army of Cardinal Bertrand du Pouget. Over twenty military companies, with soldiers in heavy armor, reconstruct the confrontation before the public, preceded by a visit to the armed camp and educational shows explaining medieval tactics, weapons, and military life. It is the most anticipated moment, drawing thousands of spectators each year.
Alongside the grand battle, the Giostra del Borgo offers a packed schedule of events:
The Giostra is also, and above all, a celebration of taste. Every evening, starting at 7:30 PM, the Locanda del Borgo and the Hostaria open, offering traditional Ferrara dishes: from cappellacci di zucca (pumpkin dumplings) to salama da sugo (cured pork sausage), to the city's typical desserts. The combination of historical re-enactment and local cuisine makes the event an identity-defining appointment for the Province of Ferrara and for all of Emilia-Romagna.
Behind the Giostra is the passion of the Contrada Borgo San Luca, one of the organizations that enlivens the city's district and palio life. The event is also an opportunity to discover the identity of Ferrara's districts and to experience, in an accessible and free context, a piece of the great medieval and Renaissance history that made the Este court famous.
The 2026 edition of the Giostra del Borgo is the XXIII edition of the event organized by the Contrada Borgo San Luca. From June 4 to 21, the green area of the Ferrara Municipal Racecourse once again dresses up for the Middle Ages, with opening every evening from 7:30 PM and the main events concentrated on weekends. The core remains the re-enactment of the 1333 battle, alongside tournaments, falconry, street performances, and the cuisine of the Locanda del Borgo and the Hostaria.
Every evening, from June 4 to 21, the Locanda del Borgo and the Hostaria are open from 7:30 PM with traditional Ferrara dishes.
