Two days of the Middle Ages in the walled village of Fornelli, with a historical procession, fire shows, and the Palio delle Contrade
The Giornate al Borgo are the great summer festival of Fornelli, in the province of Isernia, and one of the most important historical reenactments in Molise. The event is recognized by the Ministry of Culture (MiC) and registered in the National Register of Historical Reenactments, testifying to its cultural value.
Fornelli is a walled village among the best preserved in Molise, nicknamed "the village of the towers" for its seven towers from the Norman-Angioin era. During the Giornate al Borgo, the walls, arcades, and squares become the natural backdrop for a Middle Ages brought back to life: you cross the drawbridge, watch costumed processions, and breathe in the charm of history.
The competitive heart of the festival is the Palio delle Contrade, the challenge between the village districts that enlivens the second day. Historical processions, flag-wavers, jesters, drummers, and fire shows complete a program that culminates in the famous Incendio del Castello (Castle Fire), the closing pyrotechnic show.
Organized by the Pro Loco Fornelli with the patronage of the Municipality and the Molise Region, the event has been running for over thirty years and is now an eagerly awaited appointment for thousands of visitors every Ferragosto.
The 30th edition of the Giornate al Borgo is scheduled for August 13th and 14th, 2026 in Fornelli. The event structure, consolidated over the years, includes a historical procession, street artist performances, the opening of the drawbridge, the Palio delle Contrade, and the final fireworks display. Organized by Pro Loco Fornelli with the patronage of the Municipality and the Molise Region.
The detailed program for the 30th edition will be announced by Pro Loco Fornelli shortly before the event. Based on the established structure, the two evenings will feature a historical costume procession, performances by flag-wavers and drummers, the opening of the drawbridge, fire shows, the Palio delle Contrade on the second day, and the Incendio del Castello to conclude.
Fornelli can be reached by car from Isernia in about 15 minutes (exit at Macchia d'Isernia from the state road). It is advisable to park in the areas outside the historic center and continue on foot.
The event traditionally takes place on August 13th and 14th.
The evenings come alive from late afternoon; bring comfortable shoes for the cobbled alleys and arrive early to secure a good spot for the Incendio del Castello.
