The ancient rite of the last Thursday of January revisited with lights and fire
Giöbia (or Giubiana) is one of the most deeply rooted winter traditions in Lombardy and Northern Italy: it is celebrated on the last Thursday of January and revolves around the rite of the bonfire, with which an effigy representing winter and negative spirits was burned, to propitiate the arrival of the good season. In Saronno, in the province of Varese, the Municipality has chosen to reinterpret this ancient custom in a modern guise.
Instead of the traditional bonfire, the Saronno Giöbia offers a show of lights, fire choreography, and luminous games in Piazza Libertà, designed to evoke the energy of the seasonal transition. The city's central square transforms into an open-air stage where tradition meets contemporary performing arts, in an evening of strong visual impact.
The event is free and designed especially for families and children. The local Red Cross offers mulled wine, hot tea, and sweets, transforming the evening into a gathering moment for the entire Saronno community. Giöbia thus becomes not only a recovery of popular memory but also an occasion for shared celebration in the heart of winter.
By revisiting the Giöbia rite, Saronno enhances a cultural heritage common to all of Lombardy and returns it to the city in a spectacular form. It is an example of how an ancient festival can be reinterpreted to speak to today's audience, keeping alive the link with the agricultural roots of the territory.
For 2026, Saronno's Giöbia will be held on Thursday, January 29, in Piazza Libertà, from 8:45 PM to 11:00 PM. The light and fire show offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the ancient propitiatory rite of the last Thursday of January. The Italian Red Cross will offer mulled wine, hot tea, and sweets, with special attention to families and children. Free admission.
