The Buonopane excursion to the Piana di Buceto, featuring blooming broom, traditional dishes, and the 'ndrezzata dance
When the slopes of Mount Epomeo turn bright yellow with blooming broom, the small village of Buonopane — a hamlet of the Municipality of Barano d'Ischia, in the Province of Naples — knows it is time for its most cherished festival. The Ginestra Festival returns every first Sunday of June, transforming a simple country walk into a true collective ritual that unites generations of Ischians and curious visitors alike.
The heart of the event is a two-hour walk that departs from the Piazza di Buonopane and climbs through trails and remnants of the island's rural tradition up to the Piana di Buceto, one of Ischia's most characteristic and lush natural areas. The route is more than just a hike: it is a way to rediscover the authentic, rustic side of the island, far from the crowded beaches, amidst vineyards, forests, and fields of broom from which the festival takes its name.
Upon reaching the plateau, the day turns into a grand community picnic: tablecloths are spread on the grass, and participants share the genuine flavors of Ischian cuisine, prepared with local produce.
Tasting is an integral part of the festival. The excursion menu features several classics of local gastronomy:
Everything is accompanied by fine local wine, which on the island of Ischia boasts an ancient tradition and a deep connection to the hand-cultivated terraces.
The most anticipated moment comes at the end of the day: the 'ndrezzata, the ancient armed dance of Buonopane performed to the rhythm of drums and castanets, with dancers facing off while brandishing wooden clubs (the mazzariello) and short swords. It is one of the most iconic folkloric expressions in Campania, guarded and passed down by the Gruppo Folk 'Ndrezzata, which uses this festival to celebrate its roots and showcase them to the public in an exceptional natural setting.
The Ginestra Festival is the perfect opportunity to experience Ischia in a different way: nature walks, conviviality, genuine food, and popular tradition all in one day. An event designed for families, hikers, and folklore lovers, which has kept the bond between the Buonopane community, its mountain, and its roots alive for over thirty years.
The 32nd edition of the Ginestra Festival took place on Sunday, June 7, 2026, under the patronage of the Municipality of Barano d'Ischia. As per tradition, the meeting point was set in Piazza di Buonopane, from where the walk towards the Piana di Buceto began, followed by the picnic with Ischian flavors and the 'ndrezzata by the Folk Group.
