Gian Galeazzo Visconti National Music Competition

A competition that nurtures the musicians of tomorrow

For over thirty years, the Gian Galeazzo Visconti National Music Competition has been one of the most anticipated events in the Italian musical education calendar. Organized in Rome by the "Amici del Visconti" association in collaboration with the G. Visconti Music School, and under the artistic direction of Maestro Giampiero Bruno, it brings together students and alumni from middle schools with musical specializations, music high school students, and young conservatory enrollees in the capital every spring. This is not a showcase for established professionals; it is a serious yet welcoming testing ground, designed for those who are learning and need a real stage.

Where it takes place

The venue is the CEI Congress Center at Via Aurelia 796, in the Aurelio district of Rome, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, the administrative heart of the Lazio region. The choice of location is no coincidence: the complex's halls are spacious enough to accommodate school orchestras of any size, and the on-site parking easily handles the cars of families and the coaches accompanying groups from outside the region. For many schools in Central and Southern Italy, the Roman trip for the "Visconti" has become an annual tradition—an educational journey that combines musical performance with the discovery of the city.

Competition sections

The regulations divide the competition into highly detailed categories, ensuring that every candidate competes against peers of a similar level of preparation:

• Section A — Soloists from middle schools with musical specializations: piano, strings, guitar, flute, clarinet, and other instruments included in the curriculum;
• Section B1 — Four-hand piano for middle school students;
• Section B2 — Chamber music, with ensembles of up to nine members;
• Section B3 — School orchestras, the most spectacular and popular category;
• Section C — Alumni soloists, students of music high schools and conservatories, for any instrument;
• Sections D1, D2, and D3 — Four-hand, chamber music, and orchestra reserved for the advanced level.

Performances range from classical repertoire to pop and jazz arrangements: it is not uncommon to hear a youth orchestra tackle Vivaldi and then dive into Stevie Wonder or The Beatles with the confidence that only a school orchestra can possess.

Jury, scoring, and prizes

Performances are evaluated on a scale of 100 by a panel of teachers and musicians. Exceeding the required threshold earns a first prize; the highest scores qualify for the absolute first prize, often accompanied by scholarships. Merit diplomas are also awarded to schools that present the highest number of awarded students, and plaques of recognition are given to teachers who distinguish themselves for their didactic work throughout the year. The rankings are published on the official website a few days after the auditions conclude.

The awards ceremony and winners' concert

The competition does not end with the reading of the scores. A few days later, the awards ceremony takes place, followed by the winners' concert: the best soloists and the most impressive ensembles return to perform before the public, this time without the pressure of being judged. It is the most beautiful moment of the event, where families from all over Italy gather in the same hall and the competition transforms into a celebration.

Why it is worth attending

The auditions are open to the public and admission is free: anyone passing through the Aurelio district during the competition days can enter and listen to dozens of different programs for free, from the first-year middle school beginner to the graduating conservatory student. For teachers, it is an opportunity to compare didactic repertoires; for parents, a window into the work done in music-specialized schools; and for the curious, simply a day of live music in a Rome that, between May and June, is already full of sunshine.
