Earth sciences told through rocks, water, and the future
Geocult is the Italian Festival of Geosciences, an event that brings Earth sciences to Lecco, telling them to a wide audience. Promoted by the Municipality of Lecco and the Fondazione Teàrte, in 2026 it reaches its third edition, confirming itself as an original outreach event on the Italian scene.
The 2026 edition is titled "Roots and Flows. From the rocks of Cermenati to the waters of the future", a reference to the geology of the Lecco area — from the rocks studied by naturalist Antonio Stoppani and geologist Giovanni Cermenati to water dynamics. Lecco, nestled between the Resegone, the Grigna, and Lake Como, is the ideal natural laboratory for a festival of this kind.
Among the most anticipated events is the show by Marco Paolini, Bestiario Idrico, staged on May 13th at the Teatro della Società: a narrative that intertwines memory, ecology, and future visions around the theme of water. Alongside the theatre, an immersive exhibition at the Lake Como Museum guides visitors from the lake to the Grignetta along the geological history of the area.
The program includes guided tours, boat and kayak trips, excursions to the Sorgente Paradone, educational workshops for schools, and an exhibition on the relationship between terroir and food and wine products. Scientific partners such as the University of Padua and the University of Milan contribute insights on water and climate change, focusing on the most fragile environments such as river deltas. A festival that makes Lecco, in the Lombardy Region, a capital of geosciences outreach.
Geocult 2026, the third edition of the Italian Festival of Geosciences, takes place in Lecco from May 8th to 17th with the theme "Roots and Flows. From the rocks of Cermenati to the waters of the future". It is promoted by the Municipality of Lecco and Fondazione Teàrte.
The program combines scientific outreach, theatre, art, and on-site experiences: an immersive exhibition at the Lake Como Museum, Marco Paolini's show, excursions, boat and kayak tours, workshops for schools, and scientific contributions from the University of Padua and the University of Milan on water and climate change.
Events take place in various locations in Lecco, including the Teatro della Società, the Lake Como Museum, and Piazza Cermenati. The city is reachable by train from Milan and Bergamo and by car from the SS36.
Many outreach events are free admission; a ticket is required for theatre performances (like Marco Paolini's). The exhibition at the Lake Como Museum is open from May 8th to 24th.
Book excursions, boat and kayak tours, and the evening performance in advance, as they often sell out.
