Genius Loci - Afternoons in the Monferrato Villages is one of the most beloved cultural festivals in the Casale Monferrato area, in the heart of the province of Alessandria, Piedmont. Promoted by the Ecomuseo della Pietra da Cantoni Foundation in Cella Monte, the initiative guides the public through winter Sunday afternoons to discover the soul of the small Monferrato villages: the genius loci, or the spirit of the place, told through its churches, palaces, stories, and historical figures.

A traveling format from village to village

Every Sunday, the festival chooses a different municipality in the Monferrato area to reveal its most evocative corners: the guide Anna Maria Bruno leads visitors through churches, historic homes, frescoes, and works of art, often little-known even to the locals themselves. The tours are designed to highlight the dense network of hidden treasures in the territory, built with the famous Pietra da Cantoni, the sandstone that gives the Ecomuseum its name.

The villages visited by the festival include Conzano, Camagna Monferrato, Occimiano, Terruggia, Cuccaro, Olivola, and Pontestura, in a journey that changes from season to season and enriches the calendar with new destinations every year.

The Pontestura stop

In Pontestura, a small town overlooking the Po river in the province of Alessandria, the festival offers an afternoon dedicated to the town's artistic heritage. The focal point is the Church of Sant'Agata, a 13th-century building that houses several canvases by Guglielmo Caccia, known as Il Moncalvo, one of the most important Piedmontese painters between the 16th and 17th centuries. The guided tour is completed with a virtual reconstruction of the ancient Castle of the Paleologi and a theatrical performance dedicated to the figure of Il Moncalvo.
