Floats and masks in the historic center
The Gemona del Friuli Carnival and the grand masked party that colors the historic center of the town, in the Province of Udine, with the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups. The event has its roots in the early twentieth century and, after some interruptions, has returned to be one of the most anticipated events of the Friulian Carnival, capable of attracting groups from numerous locations in the region.
The procession crosses the heart of Gemona following an itinerary in the historic center - Via Caneva, Piazza Garibaldi, Via Cavour, Piazza del Municipio, Via XX Settembre, and the small square of the Bridge - with allegorical floats and masked groups arriving from locations such as Prepotto, Chions, Romans d'Isonzo, Buja, and Colloredo di Prato. Music, confetti, and entertainment accompany the parade, in a festive atmosphere that involves young and old.
The Carnival is organized by the Pro Loco Pro Glemona Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Gemona del Friuli, with the work of volunteers and masked groups who prepare floats and costumes each year. The event, strongly linked to bad weather which in some editions has forced its postponement, represents an identity moment for the Gemonese community and a showcase of Friulian carnival creativity.
After cancellations due to bad weather, the Gemona del Friuli Carnival returns to the square on Sunday, March 8, 2026, with the parade starting at 2:30 PM. Allegorical floats and masked groups from locations such as Prepotto, Chions, Romans d'Isonzo, Buja, and Colloredo di Prato parade through the historic center, accompanied by music and entertainment, in a celebration organized by Pro Loco Pro Glemona in collaboration with the Municipality.
