A summer night among medieval alleys, Formia's flavors, and street performers
Just over three kilometers from the center of Formia, in the province of Latina, the village of Trivio climbs the first slopes of the Aurunci Mountains, overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta. It is an ancient core of stone houses, arches, and narrow stairways, documented as far back as the Middle Ages around the church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo. For one July evening, this silent maze completely changes its face: lights, cooking aromas, and music transform it into a grand neighborhood festival, open to anyone willing to head up from the coast.
The heart of the event is a true taste itinerary. The stalls are not concentrated in a single area, but distributed along the village streets: starting from via dei Guglielmi and continuing along via Papa, piazzetta Fabiani, via Granatello, and via Capo Croce, until reaching Piazza Sant'Andrea, which serves as the main stage. Walking from one station to another is part of the experience, as it allows you to discover corners of the village that go unnoticed during the day.
The offerings showcase Formia's cuisine in its two souls, savory and sweet: dishes from the peasant tradition of the Aurunci hills and recipes looking toward the nearby sea, accompanied by homemade desserts prepared by local associations. The event is the direct heir to the historic Sausage Festival, which for years enlivened Piazza Sant'Andrea: the local sausage remains one of the gastronomic highlights of the evening, but today the format has expanded into a broader and more varied route.
Alongside the food, the other half of the title is folklore. In the alleys, street performers entertain audiences of all ages: jugglers, magicians, a fakir, and a soap bubble show designed especially for children. These are roving performances that you encounter almost by chance as you move from one stall to another, giving the evening a continuous rhythm without any downtime.
Live music completes the picture. In keeping with the festival's tradition, the organizers focus on bands and dance orchestras that accompany the evening until late, with popular repertoires and ballroom music that get families, groups of friends, and tourists dancing in the square. In past editions, local orchestras and entertainment groups have performed, in a format that favors participation over a seated concert.
The food and wine section is joined by a craft market set up along the route, featuring local creations and small-scale productions. It is an opportunity to take home a piece of the territory and give visibility to local hobbyists and artisans, in a light format that integrates well with the evening stroll.
The event is born from the work of the Centro Socio Culturale Trivio together with the Pro Loco Città di Formia, with the support of the Formia municipal administration. It is part of the summer program Estate nel Borgo di Trivio, which between early and mid-July brings concerts, amateur theater performances, book presentations, and gastronomic evenings to the village, distributed between Piazza Sant'Andrea and piazzetta Fabiani.
In the landscape of summer festivals in southern Lazio, Gastronomy and Folklore in the Village of Trivio has a precise character: it is not a fair in a parking lot, but a celebration that uses the village itself as a stage. Those spending their holidays between Formia, Gaeta, and Sperlonga will find here an evening detour just minutes from the coast, with a view of the gulf that, at sunset, is worth the short uphill drive alone. Admission is free and the atmosphere remains that of a genuine village festival.
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, from 8:00 PM, the medieval village of Trivio, a hamlet of Formia in the province of Latina, hosted a new edition of Gastronomy and Folklore. The formula remained the tried-and-true one: a tasting trail spread across the village streets, with traditional Formia specialties offered by local association stalls, and a craft market accompanying the stroll.
The entertainment program alternated between street performers and live music, featuring magic tricks, juggling, a fakir performance, and a soap bubble show dedicated to the little ones. The evening concluded with music for dancing in Piazza Sant'Andrea, the heart of the village. The event is part of the Estate nel Borgo di Trivio program, organized by the Centro Socio Culturale Trivio with the Pro Loco Città di Formia and the support of the Municipality.
Approximate times provided by the organizers; the entertainment program took place in a roving format throughout the village.
Trivio is a hillside hamlet of Formia, about 3.5 km from the city center. By car, drive up from the Via Appia following the signs for Trivio-Maranola; on festival evenings, parking near the village is limited, so it is better to leave the car in the spaces downhill and continue on foot. By train, the reference station is Formia-Gaeta, on the Rome-Naples line via Formia, served by Intercity and regional trains; from the station, you can reach Trivio by taxi or urban connections. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, about an hour and a half drive away.
The evening generally starts at 8:00 PM and continues until late at night. Admission is free; you only pay for what you consume at the stalls, with prices typical of a village festival. The stalls are distributed between via dei Guglielmi, via Papa, piazzetta Fabiani, via Granatello, via Capo Croce, and Piazza Sant'Andrea.
The village is made of stone alleys, steps, and slopes: comfortable shoes are recommended, especially with children or a stroller. It is advisable to arrive early to find a spot and enjoy the view of the Gulf of Gaeta before it gets dark. For accommodation, the widest range of options is in Formia and along the coast toward Gaeta and Scauri, just a few kilometers away.
