About Culture Festival

At the beginning of June, the Garbatella district turns into a massive open-air stage: the Culture Festival, organized by the Controchiave Cultural Association, brings together musicians, actors, dancers, choirs, and street performers in a free, participatory event. Featuring concerts, theatrical shows, scattered performances, and booths from local associations, it is one of Rome's longest-running and most beloved neighborhood festivals, established in 1994 and reaching its 33rd edition in 2026.

A neighborhood festival running for over thirty years

The Garbatella Culture Festival began in 1994 under the name Music Festival, initiated by the Controchiave Cultural Association, and was renamed Culture Festival in 1997 to include theatre, dance, and other artistic disciplines. Since then, the event has taken place every year at the beginning of June, becoming a defining event for the Garbatella district in Rome's Municipio VIII.

For over twenty years, the festival occupied the streets, squares, and the famous public housing lots of Garbatella, with performances spread across courtyards and staircases. Since 2017, the hub has moved to Parco Garbatella, the green area next to the «Principe di Piemonte» primary school on Via Rosa Raimondi Garibaldi: an open-air space that allows for stages, booths, and the public to be concentrated in one place, without losing the original spirit of a self-managed popular festival.

A cultural incubator, not just a festival

Controchiave defines the event as a true "cultural incubator": musicians, actors, dancers, and local residents bring their artistic projects to the stage—often still in development—and put them into dialogue with one another. There is no headliner closing the night, but rather a dense succession of young bands, amateur groups, grassroots theatre companies, and choirs. The slogan that has accompanied the festival for years is simple and clear: culture is a language of peace.

Typical program

  • Youth Evening — on Friday, with the FxC Young section, bands of the youngest musicians from the district and the city take turns on stage.
  • The Main Day — Saturday is the heart of the festival: musical and theatrical performances follow one another from late afternoon until evening, featuring street artists, dance, commedia dell'arte, and masks.
  • The Night of Choirs — Sunday is dedicated to choral singing, with a long relay of groups passing the stage to one another.
  • The Booths — associations, neighborhood committees, volunteer groups, and local producers liven up the area with information stands, workshops, and food stalls.

Free admission and participatory spirit

The Culture Festival has always been free and relies on self-financing, volunteer work, and collaboration with local entities: Legambiente Garbatella, Orti Urbani Garbatella, Officine Urbane Garbatella, and Radio Città Aperta, with the patronage of the Municipio VIII of Rome. In years when funding was lacking, the festival was not cancelled but reinvented in an unplugged version, without large stages or amplification: a choice that reaffirmed its deeply communal nature.

Why it's worth visiting

Those arriving in Garbatella during these days will find something that has become rare in Rome: a festival that isn't a pre-packaged program imposed from above, but the result of an entire neighborhood's work. Families spread blankets on the lawn, children run between stages, and groups rehearse their final pieces sitting on the grass. It is also an excellent opportunity to discover Garbatella itself, one of the most photogenic districts in the capital, with its 1920s lots, internal gardens, and "Roman barocchetto" architecture.

Culture Festival — edition 2026

The thirty-third edition of the Culture Festival took place at Parco Garbatella from Friday, June 5th, to Sunday, June 7th, 2026, featuring three distinct days: the youth music evening FxC Young, the great Saturday with scattered musical and theatrical performances and association booths, and the Sunday conclusion entrusted to "The Night of Choirs". Free admission to all events.

The 33rd edition, from June 5th to 7th, 2026

In 2026, the Garbatella Culture Festival celebrated its thirty-third edition, extending over an entire weekend. Parco Garbatella, on Via Rosa Raimondi Garibaldi, hosted three consecutive days built around three different souls of the event: the youth, the neighborhood, and choral singing.

The main day, Saturday, June 6th, kicked off in the late afternoon, around 5:30 PM, and transformed the district into a distributed cultural arena, with scattered performances, street artists, bands, dance, theatre, commedia dell'arte, and masks. Next to the stages, there were booths from the Municipio VIII associations and a craft beer point managed by the Fustock brewery from the Castelli Romani area.

The event was organized by the Associazione Culturale Controchiave APS in collaboration with Legambiente Garbatella and Orti Urbani Garbatella.
