The day that gives Pomigliano d'Arco back to its children
Every May, Game Day transforms Pomigliano d'Arco, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, into a large open-air playground. Promoted and organized by the Municipality of Pomigliano d'Arco, in Campania, the event was born from an idea as simple as it is radical: to give squares, streets, and parks back to the little ones, freeing them from traffic for an entire morning and dedicating them to play, creativity, and social interaction.
This is not just an entertainment event. Game Day is an educational project that involves all local schools—nursery, primary, and secondary—and mobilizes over a thousand students every year, along with teachers, associations, cultural operators, and families. The premise is that play is a right and a universal language capable of overcoming barriers and prejudices.
The first edition took place on May 18, 2023, with the theme "how we used to play," dedicated to rediscovering traditional games and folk customs: schools and main city squares were converted into play areas. Since then, the event has grown year by year, changing themes and urban settings while keeping its civic vocation intact.
With the 2026 edition, the fourth, the event chose Parco Partenope, in the former 219 district: a peripheral area of the city, and a deliberately symbolic choice, to bring institutions, schools, and cultural initiatives exactly where presence and oversight are needed most. The park, the "Buonpensiero 2" school complex, and the MOMO center were connected by pedestrian paths to form a single secure campus, entirely free of cars.
The program is tailored for every age group, with classes rotating between different stations following a pre-established itinerary. For nursery and primary schools, the focus is on shared play and wonder:
Secondary schools are not just spectators: for older students, the schedule offers activities that combine civic education, sports, and technology.
The common thread of the initiative is inclusion. The municipal administration insists on one point: a city that welcomes children's play automatically becomes fairer and more livable for all its inhabitants, as it requires accessible sidewalks, well-kept green spaces, and safe streets. Game Day is therefore also an exercise in reclaiming public space, with pedestrianized routes connecting schools and green areas.
The official opening is an institutional moment attended by the mayor, municipal administrators, school principals, and involved associations, highlighting how the day is the result of shared direction between the Municipality, the school system, and the third sector.
Participation is completely free, and the day takes place during school hours in the morning: classes reach the stations accompanied by teachers, while families can follow shows and activities in public spaces. For Pomigliano d'Arco, an industrial city in the Vesuvius area known primarily for its factories and the jazz festival that bears its name, Game Day represents another face of local identity: that of a community that chooses to invest in its children and the quality of urban life.
For its fourth edition, Game Day left the city center and chose a suburb: Parco Partenope, in the former 219 district of Pomigliano d'Arco. A choice claimed by the municipal administration as an act of urban regeneration, to bring schools, institutions, and culture where public presence is most needed.
The Municipality created an integrated and secure campus, freed from traffic, by connecting the park, the "Buonpensiero 2" school complex, and the MOMO center with pedestrian paths. Classes rotated between stations according to a pre-established itinerary, from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM.
The official opening, at 9:00 AM, saw the participation of Mayor Raffaele Russo and Campania Regional Councilor Giorgio Zinno, along with municipal administrators, schools, and involved associations. The event was presented by councilors Marianna Manna (Labor and Commerce), Giovanni Russo (Public Education and Culture), and Mattia De Cicco (Budget).
9:00 AM — Official opening with Mayor Raffaele Russo, Regional Councilor Giorgio Zinno, and municipal administrators, along with schools and associations.
Throughout the morning: creative workshops, play circuits, artistic activities, and entertainment in the squares and open spaces of the neighborhood.
The 2026 edition was held at Parco Partenope (former 219 district) in Pomigliano d'Arco, with the "Buonpensiero 2" school complex, Slargo Buonpensiero, and the MOMO center as organizational hubs. Previous editions involved Piazza Mercato, Piazza Municipio, Piazza G. Leone, and Via Ercole Cantone.
By car: take the Pomigliano d'Arco exit from the A16 or the SS7 bis (Asse Mediano), about 15 km from Naples. By train: the Pomigliano d'Arco station is served by the EAV Circumvesuviana Naples–Baiano line. The nearest airport is Naples Capodichino, about ten kilometers away.
Free admission. The event takes place in the morning, during school hours, and is primarily aimed at local schools; however, shows and activities in open spaces are accessible to families. Information available at the Municipality of Pomigliano d'Arco, Piazza Municipio 1, tel. +39 081 5217111.
Comfortable clothing and sneakers are a must: you will be walking between stations. In May, the morning can already be warm, so it is useful to bring water and a hat. The affected areas are closed to traffic: it is better to park in nearby streets.
