Galactic Carnival of Orsara

A Carnival born from the youth

The Galactic Carnival is the masked festival of Orsara di Puglia, a small village in the Monti Dauni area in the province of Foggia, in the heart of northern Puglia. Unlike the large, historic Puglian carnivals, this event is a grassroots initiative: the young people of the Galattica Orsara project, together with local associations, imagine, build, and animate the parade. The result is a fresh and participatory Carnival that transforms the town's streets into a path of colors, masks, and joy.

The parade through the village streets

The heart of the event is the masked parade that travels through the historic center of Orsara. It departs from the Madonna della Neve district and winds through the streets and alleys of the village, accompanied by confetti, streamers, and allegorical floats handmade by local youth and associations. The route traditionally concludes at the Senior Center, where the party continues with music, dancing, and moments of sharing dedicated to children and adults.

A festival for the whole community

More than just a parade, the Galactic Carnival is a moment of gathering for the entire town. Families, children in costumes, and associations come together to enjoy a day of fun with free admission. The atmosphere is typical of the small towns of the Monti Dauni, where every festival becomes an opportunity to strengthen neighborhood ties and celebrate the village's identity.

The Galattica project

The event is part of the Galattica — Rete Giovani Puglia program, an initiative of the Puglia Region managed by the Youth Policy Section and ARTI (Regional Agency for Technology and Innovation), which offers young Puglians information services, activation support, and opportunities for local peer-to-peer engagement. In Orsara di Puglia, the Galattica hub is coordinated by the social cooperative Medtraining in collaboration with the Municipality of Orsara di Puglia: the Galactic Carnival is one of the most visible outcomes of this youth-led initiative.

Known primarily for its events linked to fire and folk traditions, Orsara di Puglia is an authentic village in the Daunian Apennines, rich in history and peasant culture. The Galactic Carnival adds a contemporary touch to this festive heritage, giving a voice to the new generations while keeping the town's carnival tradition alive.

The dates for the 2026 edition of the Galactic Carnival have not yet been officially announced.
