Handmade fusillo, Greco di Tufo DOCG, and wine under the stars in the heart of the Sabato Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every summer, Petruro Irpino, a tiny municipality in the province of Avellino overlooking the Sabato Valley, comes alive for the Fusillo and Greco di Tufo Festival. For two evenings, the village's historic center—its alleys, squares, and open spaces at the foot of the ancient baronial palace—fills with long tables, food stalls, and music. What began as a local community feast has evolved over the years into one of the most anticipated summer events in this corner of Campania.
The festival's signature dish is fusillo, handmade according to Irpinian tradition and rolled one by one around a metal rod. Served with local sauces, it is the reason hundreds of visitors flock to Petruro every year: a humble product in terms of ingredients, yet rich in craftsmanship, heritage, and identity—here, it is more than just a meal; it is a family story.
The other protagonist is Greco di Tufo DOCG: Petruro Irpino lies within the exclusive production area of this white wine, one of Campania's most prestigious. For years, the festival has partnered with Calici di Stelle, the national event promoted by the Wine Cities and the Wine Tourism Movement, which combines wine tasting with stargazing during the nights around San Lorenzo. In Petruro, the evening features astronomical observation points to admire stars and planets with a glass in hand.
The festival's motto is simple: «Eat, drink, and dance». The evenings are filled with live music, both stationary and roving, as folk groups and traditional Campanian bands lead the crowds through the village late into the night. It is an inclusive, family-friendly event held entirely outdoors in the streets of the center.
The festival has a long history: the 34th edition was held in August 2022 and the 37th in August 2025, a sign of rare continuity for a village of only a few hundred residents. The event is organized by the Committee for the Feast in honor of Maria SS. di Montevergine with the support of the Municipality of Petruro Irpino, showcasing a model of local volunteerism that involves almost the entire community.
The event is traditionally held around Ferragosto (mid-August). In 2022, the festival took place on August 11, 12, and 13, while in 2025, the dates were August 12 and 13. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced; it is advisable to check the Municipality's channels and local Irpinian press a few weeks before Ferragosto.
With fewer than three hundred residents and an altitude of about 500 meters, Petruro Irpino is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Avellino. The festival is the perfect opportunity to explore its historic fabric, the views over the Sabato Valley, and the hospitality of the locals, in a territory that blends great white wines—Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino—with authentic, rustic cuisine.
At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Fusillo and Greco di Tufo Festival in Petruro Irpino, in the province of Avellino. The event is, however, a consolidated fixture of the Irpinian summer calendar: the 37th edition took place on August 12 and 13, 2025, while the 34th edition in 2022 spanned three evenings, from August 11 to 13.
Barring changes, the festival should once again take place around Ferragosto in 2026, following the usual format: food stalls in the historic center serving handmade fusillo, tastings of Greco di Tufo DOCG and other local wines, live music, and the Calici di Stelle evening dedicated to stargazing.
We recommend checking the final dates and program with the Municipality of Petruro Irpino and on tourism portals of the Avellino province before traveling.
Petruro Irpino is located in the Sabato Valley, north of Avellino, and can be reached by car via the roads connecting the Irpinian capital to the Greco di Tufo production area. During the festival evenings, parking is available along the roads at the entrance to the village; the historic center is pedestrian-only.
Access to the evenings is traditionally free; dishes, tastings, and drinks can be purchased directly at the food stalls set up in the village.
