The spring concert of the Chienes brass band in the Puster Valley
The Frühjahrskonzert der Musikkapelle Kiens is the annual spring concert of the brass band from Chienes/Kiens, a town in the Puster Valley, South Tyrol. Every May, the band performs at the Vereinshaus in Chienes with a program specially curated for the occasion. It is the moment when the musicians showcase the results of an entire winter of rehearsals before an audience of locals, families, and friends from neighboring bands.
As in most South Tyrolean villages, the Musikkapelle is a cornerstone of community life in Chienes. Blasmusik, or wind band music, accompanies processions, patronal feasts, and local holidays, with the spring concert serving as its most formal showcase. The repertoire spans from traditional Tyrolean marches to overtures, symphonic band works, film scores, and modern compositions, creating a program that balances solemn moments with lighter, upbeat pieces.
The Musikkapelle Kiens was founded in 1820 by the parish priest Viktor Girtler, making it one of the most historic bands in the Puster Valley. Throughout the 19th century, it served as the fire brigade band and participated in major Tyrolean celebrations. Today, it consists of about 56 active musicians, accompanied by Marketenderinnen (traditional canteen women) and flag bearers, all wearing the traditional Puster Valley costume. The band is currently led by Kapellmeister Matthias Kirchler.
The Frühjahrskonzert is more than just a concert: it is a social gathering for the entire Chienes community and fans of wind band music in the region. Admission is free, and the Saturday evening event is a wonderful way to support the band while celebrating the cultural and social value of South Tyrolean Musikkapellen.
The 2026 spring concert of the Musikkapelle Kiens took place on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 8:00 PM at the Vereinshaus in Chienes/Kiens, with free admission. The edition was announced as the Jubiläums-Frühjahrskonzert (Jubilee Spring Concert), marking a year filled with important milestones for the village's music scene, including the 25th anniversary of the "Kiena Kirschta" (Chienes Cherry Festival) and the 20th anniversary of the Jugendkapelle Kiens-Terenten.
As per tradition, the evening featured a program of wind band music curated by the band under the direction of Kapellmeister Matthias Kirchler, performed for the local community and visitors from the Puster Valley.
Chienes/Kiens is located in the Puster Valley, South Tyrol. By car, it is accessible via the Puster Valley state road (SS49). By train, the Puster Valley railway line stops at nearby stations, with connections to Brunico and Bressanone.
