Performing arts between villages, trails, and woods of the Alto Frignano modenese
The FRAIL Festival is a summer performing arts review held in the Alto Frignano, in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, centered in the Municipality of Montecreto, in the province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna). Promoted by the association InStabile 19 APS, the festival also involves the neighboring municipalities of Sestola and Fanano, distributing theatre, dance, and music performances among villages, trails, woods, and a historic theatre hall reopened after twenty years of silence.
The name FRAIL is both a manifesto and a method: the fragility of mountain territories, often considered marginal, becomes the starting point for building possible visions. The festival's geographies are the real ones of the Modena mountains and the poetic ones that art can open even in places that seem forgotten by the future. The project was born as an evolution of the previous Festival Natura Fragile and investigates the deep link between culture, community, and nature.
The program alternates contemporary theatre, dance, concerts, and storytelling, with some proposals that move beyond conventional venues to engage with the landscape:
Past editions have hosted companies and artists from the national contemporary scene, with a particular focus on dance and experimental theatre.
FRAIL is produced by InStabile 19 APS in collaboration with the Municipality of Montecreto and the Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region (reviews «Montagna Mia» and «Musiche ad alta quota») and the Fondazione di Modena. All shows have free admission, in line with the festival's aim to make art accessible and to bring cultural life back to the Apennine villages.
The FRAIL Festival is an opportunity to experience the Apennine summer differently: attend quality shows in natural settings, walk along the trails of the Modena mountains accompanied by music, and rediscover villages like Montecreto, Sestola, and Fanano in a new light, suspended between nature and creativity.
The 2026 edition of the FRAIL Festival is scheduled from July 23 to August 4, 2026 in Montecreto and the municipalities of Sestola and Fanano, in the Modena Apennines. The review, promoted by InStabile 19 APS, confirms its identity as a performing arts festival immersed in nature, with theatre, dance, and music shows, artistic treks, and night vigils in the woods.
The dates are indicated by the official calendar of the Emilia-Romagna Region as part of the «Montagna Mia» and «Musiche ad alta quota» reviews. The complete program, with guest companies and shows, will be released by the organization closer to the event. As is tradition, admission to all events is free.
