The international hot air balloon gathering in the heart of the Sannio region
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Some events are meant to be heard about, while others are best experienced by looking up at the sky. The Fragneto Monforte Balloon Festivalโlong known as the International Hot Air Balloon Gatheringโfalls firmly into the latter category. Every October, the municipality of Fragneto Monforte, a village of just over 1,700 inhabitants perched on the Sannio hills in the province of Benevento, becomes the Italian capital of hot air ballooning for a few days. Balloons inflate at the airfield at the first light of dawn before drifting slowly over the gullies and vineyards of inland Campania: a spectacle that draws tens of thousands of visitors each year to a town that otherwise enjoys the quiet rhythm of agricultural life.
The festival's history began in 1986, when a group of locals returned home after witnessing a balloon festival in Switzerland. While the idea seemed too ambitious for a small Apennine town, the first edition was held in October 1987 with a handful of Swiss crews. From that initial core, the event has grown into a recognized fixture on the European ballooning circuit: in 2025, the 37th edition hosted eighteen crews from Belgium, Lithuania, Spain, France, and Italy.
The technical heart of the festival lies in the ascents, scheduled for sunrise and sunset, the two windows when the wind is most stable. Those wishing to fly can choose between two very different formats:
Spaces are limited and booking is essential, as the festival regularly sells out. All ascents are subject to weather conditions: in the event of rain or strong winds, flights are cancelled or postponed, while the rest of the program continues. As evening falls, the Burner Show takes center stage, with balloons illuminated by burners pulsing in the dark like giant lanterns.
The gathering is about more than just balloons. The ground program is designed to fill the entire day, engaging audiences of all ages with food and wine tastings dedicated to Sannio products, live music, folk groups, street performers, children's workshops, horseback riding, quad tours, off-road exhibitions, and various sporting and cultural events. Recent years have seen the introduction of honors such as the Farnetum Award, given to individuals and institutions contributing to local development, and the Grand Prix Fragneto, awarded to the best pilots and teams.
A regional promotion project called The Valley of Balloons (La Valle delle Mongolfiere) has been developed around the festival, offering packages that combine flights with accommodation and visits to nearby villages. It is the smartest way to experience the event: Fragneto Monforte is about 10 kilometers from Benevento, a city of Samnite and Roman origin famous for its Arch of Trajan and Roman Theater, and lies in the heart of a wine region known for Aglianico del Taburno and Falanghina del Sannio.
Alongside the October gathering, the organization has developed a program for younger generations: the FMBF Youth Camp, a residential week combining balloon flights, practical training, and outdoor activities for young people from various countries. The 2026 edition of the camp took place from July 20 to 27, 2026, confirming the organizers' commitment to transforming the festival into a year-round project rather than just a weekend spectacle.
Access to the festival area is free: only flights and specific activities have a cost. Balloons take off from the sports field area, which also hosts the food stands and the main stage. It is advisable to arrive very early for sunrise ascents, pack a jacket as Sannio mornings in October can be chilly, and check the updated program on official channels: schedules depend on the wind.
The official website of the Fragneto Monforte Balloon Festival confirms that the organization is working on the 38th edition of the international hot air balloon gathering, but has not yet published the calendar. The traditional window for the event is the first half of October, during the long weekend that has brought European crews and tens of thousands of visitors to Fragneto Monforte in previous years.
In the meantime, the FMBF brand has already had a public moment in 2026: the FMBF Youth Camp, the international week dedicated to young people featuring balloon flights, practical training, and outdoor activities, was held from July 20 to 27, 2026. In the summer of 2026, the festival also became the center of local debate regarding a wind farm project in the municipal area, discussed by the Sannio press in relation to the future of aerostatic ascents.
As always, admission to the festival area will be free, while flights require booking and are paid. Official dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition will be communicated on the official website and social media channels: this page will be updated as soon as they are available.
By car: Fragneto Monforte is about 10 km from Benevento, 65 km from Naples, and 200 km from Rome. From the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Benevento exit and follow provincial roads toward the Tammaro Valley. Traffic in the village is heavy during the festival: it is best to follow signs for designated parking areas and continue on foot.
By train: Arrive at Benevento Centrale station (connections from Naples, Caserta, and Foggia), then take a bus or taxi to Fragneto Monforte. In some editions, special festival shuttles have been organized.
By plane: Naples-Capodichino Airport is about an hour and a half away by car.
Admission to the festival area is free. Hot air balloon flights are paid and require mandatory booking (spaces are limited, and the event often sells out): tethered flights, free flights, and premium packages are available. Bookings and updated rates are available via the official website and the event's tourism partners.
Accommodation in Fragneto Monforte is limited. The most convenient base is Benevento, with hotels and B&Bs just a 15-minute drive away, or farmhouses (agriturismi) in neighboring towns (Pesco Sannita, Campolattaro, Morcone). Availability fills up quickly during the festival weekends, so booking weeks in advance is recommended.
