Popular games, traditional cuisine, and Palio in the hamlet of Fossacaprara
In Fossacaprara, a hamlet of Casalmaggiore in the province of Cremona, the Sagra di Fossa has a unique characteristic that sets it apart from the many festivals in the region: here, before food and conviviality, comes popular games, considered by the organizers to be the true driving force of the festival. It is an event that has enlivened the village for over twenty years at the end of August.
The most anticipated moment is the Italian Championship of Sbürla la Rôda, a competition with straw bales linked to a practice recognized as intangible cultural heritage, along with the Palio di Fossa which takes place on Sunday. There are also the Invido championship and other traditional peasant games.
The festival complements the games with a rich cultural program: classical music concerts in the church every evening, street artists, book presentations on local history, and a review of animated short films for children. Traditional dishes are served, including gnòc a la mulinèra and trippa (tripe).
The organization is entirely entrusted to the volunteers of the OltreFossa association, who renew the event every year, keeping the hamlet's identity alive. The Sagra di Fossa thus represents an important part of the summer calendar for the Casalmaggiore area and the entire Oglio Po region, in the province of Cremona.
The Sagra di Fossa continues its long tradition in 2026 in the hamlet of Fossacaprara, Casalmaggiore. The structure, which centers on popular games—from the Italian Championship of Sbürla la Rôda to the Palio di Fossa—is confirmed, alongside concerts, entertainment, and local cuisine. The detailed program and precise dates will be announced by the OltreFossa association closer to the event, traditionally held at the end of August.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be published by the OltreFossa association in the weeks preceding the event.
Following the pattern of past editions, the festival includes:
