The Epiphany bonfire in the Middle Friuli plain
In Gradisca, a hamlet of the municipality of Sedegliano in the province of Udine, one of the most cherished traditions of Friuli comes alive on the evening of January 6th: the Fogoron, the great Epiphany bonfire. Like the many pignarûi lit across the region on this night, the Fogoron is much more than a fire: it is an ancient propitiatory rite, linked to the cycle of seasons and harvests.
According to custom, the direction of the smoke and sparks (faliscje) rising from the pyre is interpreted as an omen for the new year: se il fum al va a soreli a mont, cjape il sac e va pal mont; se il fum al va a soreli jevât, cjape il sac e va al marcjât (if the smoke goes towards the sunrise, take your bag and go around the world; if the smoke goes towards the sunset, take your bag and go to the market). This is a piece of farming wisdom passed down through generations, which draws the community around the flames every January 6th.
The Fogoron of Gradisca is organized by the local Pro Loco in the Braide Grande development, along the road from Gradisca to Pannellia. From late afternoon, stands offer hot drinks, sweets, and local specialties. Pasta is served to everyone, and the Fogoron lottery is drawn. Befana arrives for the children, while a fireworks display closes the evening under the winter sky of the plain.
The festival is part of the rich calendar of Epiphany bonfires that animate the Municipality of Sedegliano and the entire Middle Friuli region at the beginning of January, in a land of countryside, ancient parish churches, and firmly rooted traditions. The Fogoron is an opportunity to gather outdoors, warm up around the fire, and wish each other a happy new year according to the customs of our ancestors.
