Flower Festival of Corpus Domini in Fiumalbo

A tradition that paints the village with flowers

The Flower Festival of Corpus Domini is one of the most heartfelt and identity-defining events in Fiumalbo, a small village in the upper Modena Apennines, nestled at the foot of Monte Cimone and Monte Gomito within the Frignano Regional Park. Every year, on the occasion of the Corpus Domini solemnity, the streets and squares of the historic center are covered with intensely colored floral artworks, made from wildflowers typical of the area.

The ephemeral art of flower carpets

The event is coordinated by the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, which, in collaboration with the entire community, designs sacred depictions on the village pavement. The carpets are made using exclusively flowers gathered from the area surrounding the village: petals, leaves, and natural materials that, patiently arranged, create highly effective works destined to last only a few hours, the time of the procession.

The central artwork, dedicated to Corpus Domini, is traditionally set up on the pavement of Piazza Umberto I. The other subjects are inspired by the liturgical feasts of the year and local devotions: from the Assumption of Mary to Palm Sunday, from Saint Bartholomew (the village patron saint) to the Nativity, from Our Lady of the Snows to Saint Michael, and Candlemas.

The origins of the flower festival

The tradition of creating artworks with flowers dates back to 17th-century Rome, when floral mosaics began to be reproduced with crushed petals in the Vatican. The first flower festivals linked to Corpus Domini then spread through central Italy between the late 18th and 19th centuries, before becoming established in numerous villages across the peninsula, including Fiumalbo.

A community celebration

More than just an event, the Fiumalbo Flower Festival is a moment of strong cohesion: the preparation of the carpets, often done overnight, involves a large group of flower artists and village volunteers. The occasion also serves as a draw for Fiumalbo natives who have moved away, bringing them back to participate in the procession and reconnect with the community. Walking among the petal artworks in the historic center of Fiumalbo, with its stone houses and medieval alleys, is an experience that combines art, faith, and the popular traditions of the Modena Apennines.
