The Fires of Saint Anthony the Abbot in Vastogirardi

On January 17th, the day of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the village of Vastogirardi (province of Isernia) renews one of the most heartfelt fire rituals in Alto Molise. In the various districts of the town, traditional bonfires are lit, around which the community gathers to warm up, sing, and share products of peasant tradition.

A Day Between Archaeology and Devotion

The event combines the religious dimension with the naturalistic and historical one. The program includes a meeting in Piazza Umberto I, a visit to the nearby Italic Temple — an important Samnite archaeological site on the outskirts of the town — and, at sunset, participation in the lighting of the bonfires after the blessing of animals and fire. It is a rite rooted in ancient celebrations linked to the winter cycle and the carnival period.

Flavors Around the Fire

The evening comes alive with the tasting of local dishes and products at the various bonfires, according to the custom that considers the fires of Saint Anthony as a moment of conviviality for the entire community. The event is part of the initiatives of Alto Molise, including the excursion "L'Escursione del Fuoco" organized by the Italian Alpine Club (Isernia section in inter-section with CAI Caserta), designed to accompany visitors of all levels in discovering Vastogirardi and its heritage.
