The magical night of the summer solstice in Barisciano, between purifying flames and ancient folk rituals
The Fire of Saint John the Baptist is one of the most evocative and cherished events in the folk calendar of Barisciano, a small town in the Province of L'Aquila nestled at the foot of the Gran Sasso, within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Every year, around June 24th, to celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist, the village revives an ancient pagan tradition once widespread across many Italian communities and later absorbed into the Christian calendar.
The heart of the festival is the lighting of the great bonfire in the Fonte Grande square. The Pro Loco of Barisciano keeps a millenary tradition alive: the village youth leap over the fire, a gesture symbolizing the purification of the soul and, at the same time, an act of courage and virility. According to ancient rural belief, crossing the flames wards off evil spirits, protects against illness, and brings good fortune for the harvest season, which begins right around these days.
The festival is rooted in summer solstice rituals. Bonfires lit in fields and on mountains were considered purifying and were ignited in honor of the sun; the smoke kept witches and evil spirits at bay. In Barisciano, legend has it that the youth bathe in the Fonte Grande before leaping through the flames. The magical night of Saint John is also linked to ancient folk practices such as gathering beneficial herbsโSt. John's wort, mugwort, rosemaryโand preparing Saint John's water, made by leaving flowers and herbs to infuse in the night dew.
Beyond the ritual component, the Fire of Saint John is a great community celebration. The evening is enlivened by the live music of Stefano Bernardi, while food stalls offer typical Abruzzese flavors: arrosticini, sandwiches, and excellent beer. Residents, curious onlookers, and visitors who reach Barisciano to witness an authentic event, far from mass tourism circuits, gather around the bonfire.
Admission to the event is free. The Fire of Saint John represents an ideal opportunity to discover Barisciano and its territory, between the peaks of the Gran Sasso and the villages of the L'Aquila plateau, on one of the most fascinating evenings of the Abruzzese summer.
