About Calascio Music School

The Calascio School of Musical Perfection transforms this Abruzzo village into a widespread laboratory for advanced musical studies. Promoted by Roma Tre University and the Municipality of Calascio as part of the PNRR project 'Rocca Calascio โ€“ Luce d'Abruzzo', it brings together young musicians and renowned masters within churches, convents, and the famous Rocca. Residencies and masterclasses conclude with free public concerts, bringing classical, sacred, and chamber music to one of the highest villages in Europe, in the province of L'Aquila.

A village turned into a musical laboratory

The Calascio School of Musical Perfection is an advanced training project that turns the small Municipality of Calascio, in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo), into a widespread musical laboratory. Born within the cultural regeneration project ยซRocca Calascio โ€“ Luce d'Abruzzoยป, funded by the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan), the School is promoted by the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts of Roma Tre University together with the Municipality of Calascio, in collaboration with Officina Musicale and the Pomerium Cultural Association.

An immersive residential experience

The guiding idea is to combine advanced musical training with the cultural and tourism development of inland territories. Young musicians, composers, and scholars from all over Italy and abroad live a residential experience in close contact with leading figures in the music world. Lessons, rehearsals, and concerts take place in the village's most charming locations: the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the churches of San Leonardo, San Nicola di Bari, and Sant'Antonio Abate, and even the evocative Rocca di Calascio, one of the highest fortresses in Europe.

The 2026 program

The 2026 edition is divided into several residencies throughout the year. It opens in spring (March 29 โ€“ April 4) with 'Masters of the Neapolitan Eighteenth Century and the young Mozart', dedicated to ensemble music and the Baroque and Classical repertoire, and continues in May and June with a composition course for film and audiovisual music. The journey culminates in July with AltaMusicA, the series of advanced-level masterclasses curated by the Pomerium Association.

  • July 13โ€“19, 2026 โ€” piano masterclass with Giorgia Tomassi and Carlo Maria Griguoli
  • July 20โ€“26, 2026 โ€” singing masterclass with tenor Gianluca Terranova and Sabrina Picci for vocal technique

Concerts open to the public

During the masterclasses and at the end of the residencies, the village comes alive with free public concerts involving teachers and students. These are moments where classical, sacred, and chamber music meet the landscape of the plateau, restoring to Calascio a cultural vocation that goes beyond the tourist season.

Why it is worth attending

For classical music enthusiasts, the School is an opportunity to listen to high-quality concerts in the unique settings of inland Abruzzo; for young musicians, it is a training path with internationally renowned masters. All this in a village that is already a film set for famous movies and a destination for those seeking the authenticity of mountain territories.

Calascio Music School โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Calascio School of Musical Perfection unfolds in several residencies throughout the year, from the masters of the Neapolitan 18th century and the young Mozart (March 29 โ€“ April 4) to film music composition (May-June), up to the AltaMusicA piano and singing masterclasses in July, with public concerts in the village.

2026 Edition

The 2026 calendar opens from March 29 to April 4 with 'Masters of the Neapolitan 18th Century and the young Mozart', dedicated to ensemble music and the Baroque and Classical repertoire, with artistic direction by maestro Orazio Tuccella and a final public concert in the church of Sant'Antonio.

From May, the project opens up to contemporary languages with a residential course on music for cinema and audiovisuals, divided into four modules (May 10โ€“16 and 17โ€“22, June 15โ€“21 and 22โ€“27).

The path is completed in July with AltaMusicA: the piano masterclass (July 13โ€“19) with Giorgia Tomassi and Carlo Maria Griguoli and the singing one (July 20โ€“26) with tenor Gianluca Terranova and Sabrina Picci. Activities take place between the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the churches of San Leonardo, San Nicola di Bari, and Sant'Antonio Abate, and the Rocca di Calascio.
