About Fierone d'Agosto

The Fierone d'Agosto is Sora's major midsummer fair, located in the province of Frosinone. On August 10th, the riverfronts of the historic center—Lungoliri Mazzini and Lungoliri Matteucci—fill with stalls offering thousands of items: clothing, homeware, crafts, and a food area featuring local Ciociaria specialties. Organized by the Ambulanti Oggi association with the patronage of the Municipality of Sora, the event draws thousands of visitors and shoppers from dawn until dusk for a day of open-air shopping along the Liri river.

A midsummer tradition in Sora

The Fierone d'Agosto is one of the most anticipated commercial events of the summer in Sora, a town in the Liri Valley in the province of Frosinone, in the heart of the Ciociaria region. Every year, on August 10th—St. Lawrence's Day, when the sky prepares for the night of shooting stars—the city center transforms into a large open-air market that attracts thousands of visitors from across the valley and neighboring provinces. In 2025, the event reached its 21st edition, confirming its status as one of the most popular street fairs in southern Lazio.

What to find among the stalls

The Fierone occupies the two riverfronts of the center, Lungoliri Mazzini and Lungoliri Matteucci, for an entire day, with a long sequence of stalls lining the course of the Liri. The range of goods is vast and designed for every budget:

  • Clothing and footwear at highly competitive prices, in keeping with the tradition of Sora's fairs;
  • Household items, homeware, fabrics, decorations, and objects for ceremonies;
  • Personal care products and small-scale handicrafts;
  • A dedicated food area with gastronomic specialties and typical products from the Ciociaria territory.

It starts early: the stalls open around 7:00 AM and the fair continues without interruption until after sunset, when the illuminated riverfronts provide the most atmospheric setting of the day.

Organization

The event is promoted by the trade association Ambulanti Oggi, which brings together public space merchants, with the patronage of the Municipality of Sora. The 2025 edition, coordinated by association secretary Antonio Morini, saw the collaboration of the municipal administration, the culture office, the SUAP desk, and the Local Police for traffic and space management. This teamwork has made the Fierone a consolidated model of a city fair over the years.

The setting: Sora and the Liri Valley

Visiting the Fierone is also an opportunity to discover Sora, a city of art and history nestled on the banks of the Liri river, at the foot of Mount San Casto. Between one stall and another, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built on a Roman-era podium, and walking through the historic center to the remains of the San Casto castle. The city, birthplace of Vittorio De Sica, is one of the natural gateways to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park: the mid-August fair falls at a time when the Liri Valley is at its most vibrant, amidst festivals, patronal feasts, and returning vacationers.

A collective Ferragosto ritual

More than just a fair, the Fierone d'Agosto is a collective ritual that anticipates Ferragosto: entire families head down to the riverfronts to browse the stalls, shop for bargains, and meet up. Together with its twin, the Easter Fierone held in the spring, it has marked the city's commercial and popular calendar for over twenty years, keeping alive the mercantile vocation that Sora has preserved for centuries as a trading hub of the middle Liri Valley.

Fierone d'Agosto — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Fierone d'Agosto in Sora has not yet been officially announced. The fair is traditionally held on August 10th along Lungoliri Mazzini and Matteucci, organized by the Ambulanti Oggi association with the patronage of the Municipality of Sora: confirmation of the date and operational information are expected in the weeks leading up to the event.

Following the success of the 21st edition in 2025, the Fierone d'Agosto is expected to return to Sora in the summer of 2026, in its traditional location on August 10th along the city's riverfronts. At the moment, the organizers—the Ambulanti Oggi association with the patronage of the Municipality of Sora—have not yet published official confirmation of the date or operational details. As is tradition, the fair will occupy Lungoliri Mazzini and Lungoliri Matteucci for an entire day with stalls selling clothing, homeware, crafts, and a food area featuring local products, with free admission from the early morning hours until after sunset. We will update this page as soon as the 2026 date is confirmed.
