The patron saint's festival of Borghetto Santo Spirito, between a fair and a procession
The Fiera di San Matteo is the patronal festival of Borghetto Santo Spirito, a lively town on the Riviera delle Palme in the province of Savona. It is celebrated every year on September 21st, the day dedicated to Saint Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist, the city's patron saint, and it is one of the most cherished events in the town's calendar.
During the day, the streets of the town centre โ including Via Viglieri, Via Giardini, and Via Dante โ host a large fair with stalls of all kinds, from local products to handicrafts, from clothing to household items. The fair attracts visitors from all over the region and represents a long-standing commercial tradition, managed by the Municipality which collects exhibitors' applications each year.
The religious dimension culminates in the evening with the Mass and the solemn procession which, starting from the church of San Matteo, crosses the main streets of the town and then returns. The festival concludes with the fireworks display that illuminates the bay, creating a suggestive atmosphere and bringing the entire community together on the seafront.
A popular seaside resort on the Savona coast, Borghetto Santo Spirito experiences a moment of strong collective identity with the San Matteo festival, where religious and popular traditions merge. It is the ideal opportunity to discover the authentic side of the town, beyond the summer season.
