The National Gathering of Street Bands that makes Ferrandina the capital of wind music
At the end of July, Ferrandina changes its appearance: for a week, the village in the Matera region transforms into the Italian capital of wind music thanks to the Fiati Festival and its National Gathering of Street Bands. A historic event, now in its thirty-ninth edition, which blends the great southern brass band tradition with musical research and training.
The festival thrives on a balance between performance and education. On one hand, the concerts and band parades fill the streets and squares of the historic center with music; on the other, the music workshops, masterclasses, and study ensembles like the Wind Orchestra make Ferrandina a national reference point for wind instrument education. A formula that attracts musicians, teachers, and enthusiasts from all over Italy.
Over the years, the Fiati Festival has built a thematic program of cultured scope: the 2025 edition, the XXXVIII, was dedicated to 'SOUND BRIDGES', an ideal dialogue between the Renaissance composer Andrea Gabrieli and the 20th-century composer Leonard Bernstein, uniting tradition and avant-garde. An approach that places the review well beyond the dimension of a village festival.
The heart of the festival are the Cloister of the Monastery of San Domenico, with its intimate acoustics, and Piazza Plebiscito, the stage for major outdoor events. Amidst the stones of the historic center, Ferrandina offers a week of immersive musical experience that is both a popular celebration and high-level training.
In 2026, the Fiati Festival Ferrandina reaches its XXXIX edition, scheduled from July 20 to 27. For a week, the village in the Matera region returns to being the Italian capital of wind music with the National Gathering of Street Bands, featuring concerts, parades, masterclasses, and musical workshops hosted in the symbolic locations of the historic center.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the year's theme, artists, and concert schedule, will be announced in the coming weeks on the festival's official website. The established structure of the event includes:
How to get there: Ferrandina is reached via the Basentana (SS 407); Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico station is on the railway line.
Venues: Cloister of the Monastery of San Domenico and Piazza Plebiscito, historic center of Ferrandina.
Workshop registration: courses and masterclasses require registration via the official festival website, with limited places.
