International jazz among the hills of Matera, in Ferrandina
Born in 2017, the Majatica Jazz Festival has become in just a few years one of the most recognizable jazz events in Basilicata. It is held in Ferrandina, a hilly village in the province of Matera that overlooks the Basento valley, and takes its name from the Majatica olive variety, a symbol of the territory. The artistic direction, entrusted to Fabio Vito Lacertosa and Raffaele Pecora, has built a precise identity: jazz as the art of listening, capable of dialoguing with the landscape and with the silence of the places.
The festival moves along two axes. The first is "Isole" (Islands), a project of solo or duo video-performances held in emblematic locations of the territory: views, churches, olive groves, and corners of the village become intimate stages where music engages with space. The second is the sequence of evening concerts, hosted in the setting of the Cloister of San Domenico and, for the final evening, in Piazza Plebiscito, featuring leading Italian and international ensembles.
Over the years, Ferrandina has hosted performers of the caliber of Fabrizio Bosso, Andy Sheppard, Ares Tavolazzi, Francesca Tandoi, and the electrifying Enzo Avitabile with I Bottari. One of the festival's most appreciated features is free admission to all concerts, a choice that makes it a popular event of the highest level, recognized by the Basilicata Region as part of the intangible cultural heritage of Lucania.
Walking through Ferrandina during the festival means exploring an ancient village, founded in the early 16th century by Federico d'Aragona, amidst Baroque churches, alleys, and views over the valley. The Municipality of Ferrandina and the Province of Matera support the event, which is now a draw for enthusiasts from all over Basilicata and beyond.
For 2026, the Majatica Jazz Festival reaches its tenth edition, confirming the formula that has led to its success: five days of video performances spread throughout the village and evening concerts with Italian and international artists. The dates are expected, as is tradition, in the second week of August, approximately from August 9th to 13th.
The detailed program for the tenth edition in 2026 will be announced in the coming weeks on the official website and festival channels.
The usual structure includes:
How to get there: Ferrandina is reached via the SS407 Basentana, Ferrandina exit; the "Ferrandina-Pomarico-Miglionico" station is on the Battipaglia-Metaponto railway line.
Tickets: concerts are free admission.
Where to stay: accommodation is available in the village and surrounding areas; Matera is about 30 km away and offers a wide choice of lodgings.
