The patronal feast of Crispano blending faith, tradition, and entertainment
The Festivities in Honor of Saint Gregory the Great are the most anticipated event of the year in Crispano, a small town in the area north of Naples, in Campania. Devotion to the patron saint has roots in the distant past: the parish dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great is documented as early as before the year 1000, and the first records of the site date back to 936. For centuries, the community has rallied around its protector in a celebration that combines religious observance with popular warmth.
The festival takes place over the course of a week, usually around March 12th, the Saint's liturgical day. Organization is entrusted to the «Amore di San Gregorio» Association, which creates a calendar full of spiritual appointments, community moments, and shows for all ages every year. It opens with the traditional flag-raising, accompanied by a marching band that traverses the main streets of the town, and the solemn blessing at the unveiling of the Patron Saint's statue, greeted by fireworks and the lighting of the illuminations.
The religious heart of the feast is represented by the Eucharistic celebrations on the Saint's day, often presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Aversa, and the solemn procession of the statue that winds through the town's streets amidst the moved participation of the faithful. Alongside the dimension of faith, there is no shortage of festivity: the evenings come alive with traditional Neapolitan music, performances of pizzica and tammurriata, live musical shows, and Neapolitan comedy, in a blend that reflects the authentic soul of Campanian popular culture.
As per the tradition of patronal feasts in Southern Italy, the festivities conclude with a grand firework display, which illuminates the sky of Crispano and seals a week of community, belonging, and shared identity. It is the occasion when the entire town, together with those who return for the event, gathers to renew a bond that has lasted for generations.
The patronal feast of Crispano was celebrated from March 8th to 15th, 2026, with eight days of events. The opening on Sunday, March 8th, featured the flag-raising with the marching band, the blessing and the unveiling of the Saint's statue, fireworks, and the lighting of the illuminations. The central days were dedicated to spirituality, while on March 12th, the Saint's day, three Eucharistic celebrations were held, with the evening Mass presided over by the Bishop. The evenings of March 13th and 14th featured live music, pizzica, tammurriata, and Neapolitan comedy. The closing on March 15th included the solemn procession of the statue and the final firework display.
Crispano is located in the area north of Naples. By car, it can be reached via the Asse Mediano or the SS7 bis; by train, via the Circumvesuviana lines and regional connections to the Neapolitan hinterland. Events take place in the town center and at the Saint Gregory the Great Parish.
All events of the patronal feast are free and open to the public.
