The patronal feast of Collesano, blending centuries-old faith with Madonie traditions
The Festival of the Madonna dei Miracoli is the most cherished event of the year for Collesano, a village in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, Sicily. Celebrated annually from May 25th to 27th, the festival honors Maria Santissima dei Miracoli, Patron Saint and Advocate of the Collesano community, culminating on May 26th with a evocative procession through the ancient heart of the town.
The history of this cult is linked to a series of miraculous events. Tradition traces the wonder back to 1571, when the bells of the Annunziata church rang spontaneously at night, while the faithful reportedly saw the Virgin surrounded by light. Other episodes are remembered throughout the 17th century, including the famous event of 1643, when—during a grain famine—the painting allegedly exuded moisture, a sign interpreted as celestial intervention. The Virgin was venerated as Patron Saint as early as 1641 and solemnly proclaimed protector of the city in 1646.
The absolute star of the festival is the precious canvas depicting the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel, kept in the Mother Church. According to popular tradition, the image is linked to the miraculous rescue of a duke's daughter who fell from a castle window and was caught by a "Beautiful Lady," in whom the child later recognized the Madonna from the painting. The canvas is considered so sacred that, during the procession, the fercolo is never placed on the ground, not even during prayer stops.
In the late afternoon of May 26th, the painting is carried on the shoulders of devotees along the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the symphonic marches of the brass band and a procession of the faithful, some of whom walk barefoot holding votive candles. Only late in the evening does the procession return to the Basilica of San Pietro, amidst the festive ringing of bells and the applause of the community.
Beyond the religious dimension, the festival offers moments of popular entertainment: itinerant music in the streets, Eucharistic celebrations, shows, and concerts in the town squares, ending with a fireworks display. It is also an opportunity to discover Collesano, its churches, and the famous Targa Florio Museum, immersed in the landscape of the Madonie mountains.
From May 25th to 27th, 2026, Collesano celebrated its Patron Saint, Maria Santissima dei Miracoli. The central moment was the procession on May 26th, with the painting of the Annunciation carried on shoulders through the historic center, accompanied by the brass band and the procession of the faithful, until its return to the Basilica of San Pietro.
Alongside the religious rites, the program included itinerant music through the streets of the village, a Eucharistic celebration in the basilica, and an evening of shows in Piazza 4 Cannoli, featuring an 883 tribute and a concert by Paolo Meneguzzi, as well as the concluding fireworks display.
Collesano is located in the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo. By car, from Palermo, take the A19/A20 motorway towards Cefalù, then continue inland. The most convenient train station is Campofelice di Roccella - Collesano on the Palermo-Messina line, followed by a bus connection.
The festival takes place every year from May 25th to 27th, with the main procession on May 26th in the late afternoon.
Religious rites and the procession are free and open to everyone. It is recommended to arrive early to find a spot along the processional route in the historic center.
