The festival of Saint Vito the Martyr in Baragiano, between popular devotion and mid-June tradition
On June 15th, the Church commemorates Saint Vito the Martyr, a figure deeply connected to Southern Italy, between Sicily and Basilicata. In Baragiano, a village in the province of Potenza in the Marmo Platano area, his festival is one of the devotional events that open the summer season.
The celebration of Saint Vito preserves the typical characteristics of Lucanian popular religiosity: liturgical functions in the village church, the procession with the saint's image through the streets of the center, and moments of gathering that involve the entire community of Baragiano. It is a more intimate festival compared to the grand patronal feast of Saint Rocco in August, but equally heartfelt.
Promoted by the parish with the support of the Municipality of Baragiano, the festival of Saint Vito is part of the rich calendar of religious festivals that mark the year in the villages of Marmo Platano and Melandro, in the province of Potenza. It is an opportunity to rediscover the community and devotional dimension of a small center in the interior of Basilicata.
In 2026, Baragiano celebrates Saint Vito the Martyr on June 15th, following the devotional tradition that opens the village's summer season. The festival combines religious celebrations with a procession and moments of community social life.
The detailed program will be announced in the coming weeks by the parish of Baragiano and the Municipality. The festival traditionally includes Eucharistic celebrations in the village church and the procession with the image of Saint Vito through the streets of the historic center.
Baragiano is accessible from the Sicignano-Potenza highway junction (Baragiano exit); it is about a 30-minute drive from Potenza. There is a train station at Baragiano Scalo.
All events are free admission.
Accommodation facilities are available in Baragiano and in the neighboring municipalities of Marmo Platano; a wide range of options is available in Potenza.
