The mountain pilgrimage between faith, picnic, and tradition
The Festival of Saint Onuphrius in Agnone, in the province of Isernia, is a tradition that unites faith and social life. On June 9th, the statue of the saint is transferred from the rural chapel on Mount Sant'Onofrio to the church of Sant'Antonio in the village; on June 11th, the faithful accompany it back in procession to the mountain sanctuary, along a path of over seven kilometers.
The journey includes traditional stops where locals refresh the pilgrims: at contrada Secolare a hearty banquet awaits them, while contrada Porfilio is the second refreshment point. It is a procession that involves entire families and many young people, in an atmosphere that mixes religious contemplation and outdoor celebration.
Around noon, the pilgrims reach the summit, where Mass and fireworks are celebrated. Many then stay on the mountain for the entire day, enjoying singing, dancing, and picnics, taking advantage of the first beautiful days of the Alto Molise summer. An authentic festival that tells of the deep bond between the community of Agnone and its mountain and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Onuphrius renews Agnone's community pilgrimage. On June 9th, the statue of the saint descends from the chapel on Mount Sant'Onofrio to the church of Sant'Antonio; on June 11th, the procession brings it back to the summit, along over 7 km, with traditional stops at contrada Secolare (with banquet for pilgrims) and contrada Porfilio. Around noon, at the summit, Mass and fireworks, followed by a day of singing, dancing, and picnics on the mountain.
Agnone is located in Alto Molise, in the province of Isernia, reachable by car via the SS86 Istonia. The nearest train station is Isernia. The pilgrimage starts from the church of Sant'Antonio in the village and reaches Mount Sant'Onofrio.
The walk is over 7 km uphill: hiking shoes, water, and comfortable clothing are recommended. Possibility of picnics at the summit. Free entry.
