The patronal feast of Potenza between faith, folklore, and the centuries-old parade of participants
There is no event more deeply felt in Potenza than the Festival of Saint Gerard, which every year, around May 30th, transforms the historic center of the Lucanian capital into a grand stage of faith and folklore. It is the festival that beautifully concludes the Maggio Potentino program and draws Potenza residents of all generations to the city, many of whom return from outside the region specifically not to miss the event.
The secular heart of the celebration is the Historical Parade of the Turks, one of the most fascinating re-enactments in Southern Italy: a procession of over a thousand costumed participants that, according to tradition, recalls the miraculous intervention of the saint in repelling a Saracen incursion. Legend blends with history in a parade that is simultaneously spectacle, devotion, and collective memory.
The symbol of the festival is the Iàccara, a ritual torch about twelve meters long and weighing almost a ton, made of reeds and bundles of wood that are lit at the climax of the parade evening, in a fire ritual that enchants the crowd. The most beloved events revolve around it: the Cantina del Portatore (Carrier's Cellar), the Pranzo dei Portatori (Carriers' Lunch), and the Borgo dei Sapori (Village of Flavors), which liven up the squares of the center with gastronomy and conviviality.
The festival combines the sacred with a rich musical offering: for days, the center buzzes with the Potenza Folk Festival in Piazza Mario Pagano, while the final evening offers a grand free concert with nationally renowned artists. On the feast day, the procession of the saint's effigy towards the Cathedral of Saint Gerard gathers the entire community in a moment of intense participation.
Promoted by the Association I Portatori del Santo (The Carriers of the Saint) with the support of the Municipality of Potenza, the Basilicata Region, and local entities, the Festival of Saint Gerard has been the quintessential identity event for the city and the Province of Potenza for decades: an appointment where tradition and living culture go hand in hand.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Gerard takes place from May 26th to 30th and confirms its most beloved format, combining music, popular rites, and devotion. The city experiences five days of events culminating in the Historical Parade of the Turks and the grand final concert.
Potenza is reachable by car from the Sicignano-Potenza junction and the SS 407 Basentana; Potenza Centrale station is connected to the main railway lines. During the festival, the historic center is pedestrianized.
The main events, including the Parade of the Turks and the final concert in Piazza Mario Pagano, are free admission.
Accommodation facilities in the center and in the districts of the capital; advance booking is recommended given the crowds during the festival days.
