About Saint Francis of Paola Forio

In Forio d'Ischia, on the first Sunday of May, the community gathers around Saint Francis of Paola, the patron saint of seafarers. Following a three-day spiritual preparation, the festival culminates in a solemn procession of the Saint's relic to the beach, a tribute to those lost at sea with a laurel wreath, and the sailor's prayer. The evening concludes along the Chiaia waterfront with traditional fireworks over the sea, blending popular devotion, brass band music, and spectacle.

The festival of the patron saint of seafarers

Every year, on the first Sunday of May, Forio d'Ischia celebrates Saint Francis of Paola, venerated as the patron saint of seafarers. It is one of the most deeply felt occasions in the religious and popular calendar of the Municipality of Forio, in the province of Naples, involving the entire community of fishermen, sailors, and families connected to the sea. The festival unites the spiritual dimension of devotion with the choral spirit of village tradition, in a blend of sacred rites, music, and entertainment that has characterized this corner of Campania for generations.

The Triduum and preparation

The festivities open with the triduum, three days of spiritual preparation marked by evening masses with sermons delivered by a guest priest. In the days leading up to Sunday, moments dedicated to children—with entertainment and activities—alternate with performances by the marching band, which travels through the streets of the historic center before offering a concert on the church parvis. The Saint's relic is kept in the Sanctuary of Saint Francis of Paola, on Via Tommaso Cigliano.

The procession and the tribute to those lost at sea

The heart of the festival is the solemn procession on Sunday. After the masses that mark the entire day, in the late afternoon, the Saint's relic is carried in a parade through the town streets to the San Francesco beach. Here, the most moving gesture of the Forian tradition takes place: the tribute to those lost at sea, with the laying of a laurel wreath in the water and the recitation of the sailor's prayer, together with the local section of the National Association of Italian Sailors. It is the moment when the community remembers those who lost their lives at sea and entrusts its devotion to the waves.

Fireworks on the Chiaia

At the end of the day, the Chiaia waterfront becomes the stage for traditional fireworks over the sea, organized by local pyrotechnicians on behalf of the Festival Committee. The stretch of water in front is closed to navigation during the show, while thousands gather along the coast to watch the light displays reflecting on the water. The evening is also enlivened by musical performances that accompany residents and visitors until late.

A deeply rooted tradition in Forio

Devotion to Saint Francis of Paola has its roots in the maritime history of Forio: once, the festivities fell in the fifteen days following Easter, but the frequent uncertainties of spring weather led to the event being permanently fixed on the first Sunday of May. Today, the festival represents an identity-defining event for the island of Ischia, capable of attracting not only the locals but also the many visitors who, at the beginning of the tourist season, discover the authenticity of a celebration where popular faith, the sea, and Campanian tradition merge into a unique experience.
