The patronal feast of Montefelcino in honor of the bishop from Africa
The Festival of Saint Esuperanzio is the patronal feast of Montefelcino, a village in the inland area of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. Every year, at the end of January, the community gathers in the mother church of Saints Severus and Esuperanzio to honor the saint who protects the village, in a celebration that intertwines solemn liturgy, music, and conviviality. It is one of those events that have marked the life of the village for generations, capable of attracting even those who have emigrated elsewhere and return for the occasion.
According to tradition, Esuperanzio was born in Africa in the 5th century and, still very young, chose baptism and the monastic life, preaching the Gospel along the North African coasts. During the crossing to Italy, he is said to have converted the ship's crew and calmed a storm with prayer. Upon arriving near Numana, on the Ancona Riviera, he was later consecrated bishop in Rome and sent to govern the diocese of Cingoli, which he led for fifteen years. For this reason, Saint Esuperanzio is venerated as the patron saint of both Cingoli, in the Macerata area, and Montefelcino: an ancient bond that, still today, brings a delegation from the Municipality of Cingoli to participate in the Montefelcino feast.
The climax is the solemn Eucharistic concelebration on Sunday, presided over by the Bishop of the diocese of Fano-Fossombrone-Cagli-Pergola. The liturgy is enlivened by the singing of the Betania interparochial choir and its musicians, while before and after the celebration the Montefelcino town band accompanies the day with its pieces: a historic ensemble, an expression of the local community, which is an integral part of the village's identity.
The religious part is followed by the community lunch, a deeply felt moment where civil and military authorities and citizens gather around the same table. It is here that the patronal feast reveals its dual nature: not only devotion, but also an occasion for meeting and cohesion for the entire community of Montefelcino and for guests arriving from neighboring villages.
The feast takes place at the end of January, coinciding with the saint's liturgical anniversary (January 24). The celebrations are concentrated on the weekend closest to the date, between Saturday evening and Sunday, and are open to all. For those visiting the Marche region out of season, it is an authentic opportunity to discover the life of a small village in the Pesaro Apennines and its most genuine traditions.
For 2026, the celebrations in honor of the patron saint were spread over two days. Saturday, January 31, at 6:00 PM, the opening Holy Mass was held. Sunday, February 1, the program entered its main phase with the 9:00 AM Mass and, at 11:00 AM, the solemn Eucharistic concelebration presided over by Bishop Andrea, enlivened by the singing of the Betania interparochial choir and accompanied by the Montefelcino town band. A delegation from the Municipality of Cingoli, a city of which Saint Esuperanzio is also patron, also participated in the celebration. The day concluded with the traditional community lunch at 1:00 PM.
The celebrations are held in the mother church of Saints Severus and Esuperanzio in Montefelcino (PU), in the Marche region.
By car: Montefelcino can be reached from the SS73bis and the Fano-Grosseto highway (E78), exit Calmazzo or Fossombrone, then continue on provincial roads towards the village. The nearest train station is Fano, on the Bologna-Ancona Adriatic line; from there, continue by car or local bus towards the inland area.
Participation in religious celebrations is free. The community lunch is usually by reservation: for information, it is best to contact the parish or the Sant'Esuperanzio Association of Montefelcino.
