One of the oldest popular festivals on the Lido of Venice, in the historic village of Malamocco
Malamocco is an ancient village on the Lido of Venice, which retains the atmosphere of a small lagoon town with its Piazza Maggiore and quiet alleyways. The Festa della Madonna di Marina is its identity core: according to tradition, its origins date back to the 14th century, when the Virgin is said to have appeared to a local farmer, while the celebration has been documented continuously since 1801, surpassing two hundred editions.
For about a week in July, the village comes alive. The religious focus is the solemn mass followed by the procession with the statue of the Madonna through the streets of Malamocco. The popular festival unfolds around these celebrations: evenings of music and dancing in Piazza Maggiore and the Piazzale, food stalls with traditional lagoon dishes, and markets. It is an occasion for the community of Malamocco and the Lido to come together in a festive atmosphere that also attracts many visitors.
Organized by the Associazione Festeggiamenti Malamocco, the festival is considered one of the oldest and most deeply rooted in the municipality of Venice. Its longevity, with over two hundred editions, makes it a true popular institution, a living testament to the religious and civil traditions of the lagoon villages.
The Festival of Our Lady of the Sea 2026, in its 224th edition, enlivens the village of Malamocco from July 6 to 14. Piazza Maggiore and the Piazzale host religious moments, including the solemn mass and the procession of the Madonna's statue, alongside popular festivities with live music, dancing, food stalls, and markets.
The detailed schedule with times for each evening is published by the Associazione Festeggiamenti Malamocco in the weeks preceding the festival.
