The festival of young creative genius in the heart of Ortigia
The Feste Archimedee are one of the main cultural highlights of the Syracuse summer. Created to showcase the creative potential of young people, they bring the island of Ortigia—the historic center of the Municipality of Syracuse—to life, turning squares, alleys, courtyards, churches, and monumental palaces into a vast, widespread stage. The festival brings together diverse disciplines: theater, dance, music, opera, science, literature, philosophy, photography, visual arts, and educational workshops, with a constant focus on innovation and the so-called new economy.
The hallmark of the Feste Archimedee is its participatory nature: it is not a showcase event, but an experience to be lived. For four days, the city is filled with performances, meetings, shows, and activities designed for children, teenagers, and families. Alongside the artistic events, there are inclusive sports activities, scientific workshops, screenings, and moments dedicated to play and social interaction. The island of Ortigia, with its unique atmosphere, serves as the natural backdrop for a journey that celebrates meeting and exchanging ideas.
Among the most anticipated moments is the grand opening parade, which starts from the statue of Archimedes and marches to Piazza Duomo, where a spectacular living chess match takes place. The event concludes with the Feste Archimedee Award ceremony, honoring individuals who have distinguished themselves in the artistic, cultural, scientific, and civic spheres, followed by the Night of Talents, a showcase for young protagonists.
The Feste Archimedee are deeply rooted in the identity of Syracuse and Sicily. The festival is named after Archimedes, the famous scientist and mathematician born in Syracuse, and makes Ortigia—a UNESCO World Heritage site—its beating heart. Over the years, the event has expanded its reach, involving iconic locations such as the Arena Maniace, next to the Castello Maniace, and the Caserma Abela, which hosts board games, role-playing games, drawing workshops, and activities for children.
Under the patronage of the Municipality of Syracuse, the Feste Archimedee offer an opportunity to discover the city's historic center through a creative and contemporary lens. Admission to the widespread events is generally free, making the festival accessible to residents and visitors alike who wish to experience the Sicilian summer through art, science, and tradition.
The 13th edition of the Feste Archimedee is scheduled from July 2 to 4, 2026, in the historic center of Ortigia, Syracuse. The theme chosen for this year is "Reconnections": a journey that celebrates the value of meeting, exchange, and collaboration between people and communities, expressed through performances, meetings, and creative projects.
The inauguration is scheduled for July 2 at 6:00 PM, with a grand parade starting from the statue of Archimedes and marching to Piazza Duomo, where the living chess match will take place. The event will bring the squares, alleys, courtyards, and historic palaces of Ortigia to life with theater, dance, music, science, literature, philosophy, photography, and workshops.
Among the new features of the 2026 edition are the spaces at the Arena Maniace and the Caserma Abela, which will host rooms dedicated to board games, role-playing games, drawing workshops, activities for children, tournaments, and meetings with local illustrators. There will also be space for Ortigia Comics - Edition Zero, a small comic book festival included in the program.
