The patron saint of Banzi between the ancient Abbey of Santa Maria and the Notte della Taranta
Banzi, a village in the province of Potenza overlooking the alta Murgia, on the border with Puglia, celebrates its patron saint San Vito Martire on June 15th. The festival is rooted in the village's millennia-old history, the ancient Roman Bantia, and is inextricably linked to its most precious monument, the Abbey of Santa Maria.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the Abbey of Santa Maria, one of the oldest in Basilicata, custodian of a history that intertwines Benedictine monasticism and medieval events. On the occasion of the patronal festival, an extraordinary exhibition of reliquaries and sacred objects is held, allowing visitors to admire a devotional heritage that is otherwise not easily accessible.
The patron saint's day includes a solemn procession with the statue of San Vito through the village streets. The civil festival complements the religious dimension: among the highlights is the concert by the Orchestra Popolare "La Notte della Taranta" in Piazza Gianturco, which brings the great tradition of pizzica and Southern folk music to Banzi.
Organised by the Comitato Feste Patronali (Patronal Festival Committee), the San Vito festival is an opportunity to discover Banzi: its Roman remains, the abbey, and the landscapes of the alta Murgia lucana, amidst wheat, stone, and silence. An authentic corner of Basilicata, suspended between history and devotion.
For 2026, the Festival of San Vito Martire in Banzi is centered around June 15th, the patron saint's day, extending to June 16th for the musical part. The organization is handled by the Comitato Feste Patronali (Patronal Festival Committee).
The detailed program with timings will be published by the Comitato Feste Patronali in the weeks preceding the event.
